본 연구는 한국의 인공해수호인 시화호로 유입하는 오염물질의 발생 특성을 규명하고 오염물질의 부하량을 산정하기 위하여 수행하였다. 이에 따라 시화호, 주변해역 및 유입하천의 수질 현황과 특성을 조사하였고, 분포형 유역모델인 CAMEL 2.6을 이용하여 시화호로 유입하는 비점오염부하량을 산정하였다. 본 연구 결과 도출된 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
2010년 4월부터 10월까지 시화호 평균수질은 COD 9.3 mg/L, TN 0.801 mg/L, TP 0.114 mg/L로 항목 모두가 수질기준 II등급을 초과하였으며, 2010년 8월 주변해역 평균수질은 COD 2.6 mg/L, TN 0.475 mg/L, TP 0.046 mg/L로 COD가 수질기준 Ⅱ등급을 초과하였다. 기준초과 주요원인은 시화호는 하천을 통한 오염물질 유입과 부영영화로 인한 식물플랑크톤 증식으로 확인되었으며, 주변해역은 안산 및 시화하수처리장 방류수의 방조제 외해 배출로 확인되었다.
2010년 8월부터 12월까지 시화호 유입하천 오염물질 농도 측정결과 반월산업단지와 시화산업단지가 위치한 산업지역의 유입하천 평균농도가 COD 12.6 mg/L, TN 5.892 mg/L, TP 0.438 mg/L로 도시지역과 농촌지역 하천의 평균농도보다 높게 나타나 시화호로 유입하는 오염물질이 비점오염물질 형태로 반월산업단지와 시화산업단지에서 많이 발생하는 것을 알 수 있었다.
2010년 10월 산업지역 하천의 상류에서 하류까지의 오염물질 농도 측정결과 COD, TN, TP 농도가 옥구천, 군자천 및 정왕천의 중류지역에서 높게 나타나 이 지역에 많은 오염원이 분포하는 것을 확인하였다. 중류지역에서 오염물질 농도가 높은 원인은 관로 오접으로 인한 오수나 냉각수의 우수관거 유입과 오수의 빗물받이 유입 등 비점오염물질의 유출인 것을 알 수 있었다.
2009년 시화호 유역의 비점오염부하량은 COD 3,009 ton/yr, TN 237 ton/yr, TP 39 ton/yr였으며, 단위 면적당 비점오염부하량은 COD 8.67 ton/㎢·yr, TN 0.68 ton/㎢·yr, TP 0.11 ton/㎢·yr였다. 단위 면적당 비점오염부하량은 COD는 시화산단 소유역, TN과 TP는 마도수로 소유역이 가장 많았다. 시화호 유역의 비점오염부하량 저감을 위해서 산업지역에 초기빗물저류시설을 설치하고 마도수로 하류에 인공습지를 조성하는 것이 바람직하다고 판단된다.
2009년 시화호 유역의 오염부하량은 COD 3,956 ton/yr, TN 918 ton/yr, TP 58 ton/yr로 추정되었으며, 비점오염부하량은 COD는 76%, TN은 26%, TP는 67%를 차지하였다. 오염부하량 중 상당량을 차지하는 비점오염부하량의 관리를 위하여 시화호 연안오염총량관리제가 차질없이 시행되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.
본 연구를 통해서 시화호로 유입하는 오염물질의 발생 특성을 파악하고 비점오염부하량을 산정하였으나 인구나 공장의 증가로 유역 상황이 달라지므로 지속적인 연구를 통해 오염물질 발생 특성과 비점오염부하량의 변화를 파악하고 그에 상응한 오염물질 관리대책을 수립하여 시행하여야 할 것이다.
