해안지역의 지하수 과잉양수와 부실관리로 인한 해수침투 문제는 전 지구적으로 발생하고 있다. 이 문제의 해결을 위해 지난 100 여 년간 많은 연구가 수행되었다. 담수주입방법은 해수침투문제를 방지하기 위한 대책으로 여러 국가에서 사용되었으나 대부분 특정 현장에 대한 적용에 그쳤다. 본 연구에서는 이상적인 대수층에서 하나 또는 두 개의 과잉 양수정으로의 해수 침투를 방지하는 데 필요한 최소주입량과 주입위치를 해석적으로 도출하였다. 이 최소주입량과 위치에 대한 해석해는 Strack의 해를 기반으로 유도되었다. 주입의 효과는 과잉 양수량 (적정 개발량을 초과하는 양수량)과 주입량의 차이로 정의되는 순 편익 (net benefit)으로 계량화되었다. 해석해는 다양한 무차원 변수들에 대한 설계곡선 형태로 제시되어 담수 주입 기술의 효과와 설계에 대한 이해를 향상시킬 수 있으며 특별한 경우에 대하여 쉽게 적용 할 수 있다.
단일 과잉 양수정은 과잉 양수량보다 적은 주입량으로 보호될 수 있는 것으로 나타났다 (즉, 양의 순 편익). 그리고 주어진 과잉 양수정을 최소 주입으로 보호 (최대 순 편익)할 수 있는 주입정의 최적 위치는 항상 양수정의 하류에서 나타나는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 과잉 양수량이 일정한 경우 양수정이 내륙에 위치할수록 최소 주입량은 줄어든다. 과잉 양수량이 증가하면 최소 주입량과 순 편익 또한 증가된다. 그러나 과잉 양수량의 증가에 따라 순 편익의 증가율은 점차 감소한다. 두 개의 과잉 양수정의 경우 관정 간격이 임계간격보다 작다면 하나의 주입정으로 두 양수정을 보호하는 것이 가능하다. 이 경우에는 최소 주입량과 위치의 거동은 전술된 단일 양수정에 대한 결과와 유사하다. 두 양수정의 간격이 증가하면 최적 주입정은 내륙으로 이동하고 주입량이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
해석해는 단순한 경우에만 적용가능하며 복잡한 문제에 대해서는 수치방법이 필요하다. 본 연구에서 유도된 해석해를 이용하여 경계면 지하수 흐름모델과 유전자 기법으로 구성된 모델의 수치 최적해를 검증하였다. 해석해와 비교 결과 수치모델은 주어진 최적화 문제의 해를 정확하게 구하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 수치해는 실제 현장에서 나타나는 복잡한 문제들의 최적 주입량과 위치 등을 설계하는 데 유용할 것으로 판단된다.
