Recently the construction structure is often built with highly complex geometric shapes. Therefore, the design elements of the construction structure becomes more important in the design process, and increases construction difficulties during the construction operation. In particular, the lack of system development practices and historical data causes over estimation in the quantity take-off of irregular construction structures compared to actual construction cost in actual practice, and causes project cost overrun. In other words, the quantity take-off for existing formal structures is relatively easy in extracting design parameters. Unlike the case of existing formal structures, the quantity take-off for irregular construction structures as well as the earthwork is difficult due to their irregular cross-sections and severe three-dimensional changes.
Therefore, in this study, a volume estimation algorithm and a BIM-based automated volume estimation system are built to estimate the volume of design elements more accurately for the irregular structures and earthwork. To achieve this research objective, the Irregular Equal Interval Surface Generation Algorithm (IEISGA) is proposed first using Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) to enable automatic quantity estimation of irregular structures of the construction sector. An earthwork quantity calculation algorithm is presented using triangulated irregular network and projection techniques to enable automatic calculation of the volume of earthwork. These processes are configured with three-dimensional object-based programs to enable the automatic calculation of the quantity of the irregular structures and earthwork. In addition, a case study has been performed to evaluate the feasibility of the IEISGA, and validate the quantity take-off algorithm when the system is applied to the irregular structures in this study.
The volume calculation algorithm presented in this study simplified the complexity of the quantity computation algorithm of the 3D solid model constructed from an existing 3D modeling software. Also, the algorithm enabled a direct quantity calculation without the additional conversion process of the irregular model created with 3D meshes, because it carries out direct quantity calculation from the 3D surface model. The case study shows that the IEISGA offers more accurate volume calculation because it attempts to calculate the quantity considering the varied cross-sections of the irregularmodels as much as possible. This quantity calculation model can be utilized for optimal construction cost estimation through a more accurate and easy quantity take-offs for irregular construction structures.
