전기석(Tourmaline)은 천연광물 중에서 영구적으로 전기적 성질을 갖는 규산염 광물로서, 그 전기성이 응용광물학적으로 활용된다. 그러므로 전기석의 물리적, 화학적 및 분광학적 특성의 이해는 환경분야 뿐만아니라 보건 분야의 용도와 활용성을 높이는데 있어 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
이 연구는 중국산 흑색 전기석과 브라질산 흑색 전기석 및 핑크 전기석, 한국 대유광산의 흑색 전기석을 비롯하여, 대조 광물군으로 중국의 경옥, 연옥, 사문석 옥 및 마노옥, 한국의 연옥, 북한 사문석 옥, 러시아 연옥을 대상으로 전자현미경(SEM) 관찰, X-선 회절분석(XRD), X-선 형광(XRF)분석, 유도결합 플라스마 분광(ICP) 분석, 퓨리에 변환 라만 분광(FT-Raman) 분석, 원적외선(FIR) 분석, 핵자기 공명(NMR) 분석, 음이온(IC) 분석, 핵자기 공명 특성을 규명하였다. 또한 전기석과 옥 광물의 광물학적, 화학적, 분광학적 특성에 대한 연구결과를 방사에너지의 분광학적 특성과 비교 검토하였다. 전기석이 지니는 계면 활성적 특성의 보건학적 효과를 규명하기 위하여 전기석이 함유된 비누를 제작하여 피부의 상태를 달리하는 50명을 대상으로 설문조사를 수행하였다.
전기석은 편광현미경 및 전자현미경 관찰 결과, 일반적으로 주상(柱狀)결정형 또는 세립상의 집합체 양상을 나타내며, 생성환경의 차이에 의한 수직방향의 조선이 발달이 관찰된다. 연구 대상 시료의 화학식, 단위포 계수 및 적외선 흡수 스펙트럼 특징을 종합할 때, 한국산 시료는 철전기석에 속하며, 중국산과 브라질산 전기석은 마그네슘 전기석의 특성을 나타낸다.
화학조성에서 Y-사이트에 속하는 금속원소는 각각 높은 Fe과 Al함량을 갖는 유형으로 구분되며, 이 들 두 원소는 서로 상대적인 함량비를 나타낸다. Al함량이 높으면 Fe함량이 감소되며, Mg함량은 증가된다. K와 Ca 함량은 그 구성 비율이 상대적이며, 이러한 특성은 Na와 K 함량에서도 동일한 양상을 나타낸다. Fe와 B 함량은 상대적인 함량비를 갖는 고용체를 형성한다. CaO/CaO+Na2O와 MgO/FeO+MgO의 함량비는 높은 정(+)의 상관관계를 갖는다.
산지별 전기석의 미량원소는 성분과 함량이 다양하며, 비교적 낮은 미량원소를 함유한다. 옥 광물의 경우, 러시아 연옥은 환경 중금속에 속하는 Cr, Cu, 및 Zn의 함량은 타 산지에 비해 매우 높다.
물과 전기석 및 옥 광물 간의 반응에서 pH-Eh 조절작용을 보여주며, pH와 DO는 반응시간이 길어짐에 따라 증가한다. 전기석의 입자의 경우에는 첨가 함량이 많아질수록 pH가 높아지며, pH=8에서 안정된다. 전기석은 옥광물에 비해 낮은 DO를 형성하며, 그 변화폭이 크다. 전기석은 증류수의 DO를 광물 첨가에 따라 초기 6시간동안은 미약한 증가시키며, 1일 경과 후에는 급격히 감소(DO=9.6이하)된 후 2일 및 5일 까지는 완만한 증가를 보인다. 증류수에서는 1일 경과후 pH가 7.22-7.26범위로서 강한 증가를 나타내며, 이후 5일 경과 후에는 감소되는 경향을 나타낸다. 한편 옥분말의 첨가에 의해서는 전기석에 비해 초기에 다소 낮은 pH(6.08-6.15)를 나타내며, 시간경과에 따른 변화는 전기석과 유사한 경향을 나타낸다. 5일 경과후의 pH는 6.05-6.11로 유지되었다.
FT-IR분석에서 전기석 시료는 단파장에서 상대적으로 낮은 투과율을 나타내며, 흡수스펙트럼의 강도가 비교적 났다. 전기석의 흡수 스펙트럼의 파장과 강도는 구성원소의 함량과 결정학적 특징에 따라 달라지며, 특히 철의 함량증가는 방사량을 감소시키는 것으로 확인되었다.
전기석의 화학조성과 분광학적 특성중 원적외선 방사량과의 상관성은 입자 시료의 경우에는 Si와 Fe함량의 방사량은 높은 정(+)의 상관성을 갖으나, Al와 Mg함량은 부(-)의 상관관계를 나타낸다. 전기석의 음이온 함량과 원적외선 방사량과의 상관성은 입자시료인 경우에는 F-, Cl-, NO32-성분에서는 비교적 높은 정(+)의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 한편, 결정학적으로 A축의 결정상수가 커짐에 따라 원적외선 방사량이 증가됨을 알 수 있다. 전기석과 옥 광물의 방사 및 분광 에너지 비교에서 옥 광물는 전기석보다 높은 에너지를 갖으며, 그중 연옥이 높은 에너지를 가짐을 나타냈다.
전기석 분말과 입자를 증류수에 넣고 일정한 시간이 경과한 후에 측정된 17O- NMR 분석결과, 전기석은 반치폭을 감소시키는 것으로 확인되었으며, 옥광물 보다 큰 반치폭의 변화를 보여줌을 알 수 있다.
증류수와 전기석 분말 및 입자와의 반응을 통해 증류수는 알칼리화 되며, 음이온 중 입자시료와의 반응에서 F-, Cl- 및 SO42-가 상대적으로 높게 생성된다.
전기석의 온열지속반응에 의한 온열효과는 인체의 체온, 맥박 및 혈압에 영향을 준다. 전기석의 온열지속 반응의 경우 체온을 1.5℃내지 0.5℃정도 높아지고 또한 온열 효과가 지속되며, 맥박은 평균 12회, 혈압은 10mgHg 상승한다. 전기석과 옥광물 온열지속반응 비교 결과 옥광물 온열지속 반응의 더 안정적인 것으로 나타났다. 전기석 비누는 피부에 매우 좋은 효과를 나타낸다. 특히 알레르기와 아토피 등의 문제성 피부에 보통이상의 개선효능이 뛰어난 것으로 확인되었다.
주요 산지별 전기석의 응용광물학적 연구결과는 전기석의 환경 및 의료 보건분야에 유용한 자료를 제공하는 것으로 판단되며 의학적으로 효과가 있는 것 같으나 앞으로 이 분야에 대한 추가적인 연구가 필요하다.
