This study aims to investigate the educational functions of university museums of natural history in Korea and the education programs being operated by them and also their connectivity with the education of general science in order to suggest that university museums of natural history exist as educational institutions for science and also how we can develop them further afterwards. This is because the focus of science education is shifting from what to learn (content-centeredness) to how to learn (method-centeredness) to cultivate creative men of ability.
For this, the paper has selected 6 university museums of natural history in Korea and 2 university museums of natural history in foreign countries as its study subjects. And by comparatively analyzing the education programs being operated by the university museums of natural history and also the contents of the subject of general science which the age groups of elementary school third grades and middle school third graders often visiting museums of natural history learn to examine the connection between them. With this research, the paper has drawn the following conclusions:
First, the education programs being operated by the university museums of natural history in Korea did show great connection with the part of life and the earth among the areas of general science, and only a part had connection with material and energy in general science.
Second, according to the research on the educational environment of the university museums of natural history in foreign countries, they secured manpower from many different areas, and they could perform in-depth research. And the results of their research were used for the exhibition and education at the museums to realize qualitative as well as quantitative improvement. However, the university museums of natural history in Korea were being operated with shortage in manpower.
Third, the education of the university museums of natural history in foreign countries targeted many difference age groups, preschool children, elementary school students, middle and high school students, undergraduates, and adults whereas that of the university museums of natural history in Korea education was only limited to preschool children or elementary school students.
Fourth, in terms of the purpose of foundation, the university museums of natural history in Korea were opened with the goal to provide education and were present as educational institutions for science; however, it is hard to think that they are performing their roles properly.
In order to solve this problem, university museums of natural history should have the division of education in the organization. Also, it is needed to develop programs differentiated from those of other institutions and also secure the space exclusively used for education as well as professional manpower to be involved in the education.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
