본 연구는 형태소를 활용한 어휘학습 방법이 중학교 한국인 영어 학습자의 어휘발달에 미치는 효과성에 대해 알아보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 서울 시내 중학교 3학년 학생 85명을 대상으로 실험을 진행하였다. 동일한 어휘목록을 바탕으로 비교군은 주제별로 구분된 단어단위로 제시한 학습자료를, 실험군은 형태소를 활용한 단어 내 구성과 구조를 강조한 학습자료를 사용하여 총 7회에 걸쳐 어휘수업을 진행하였으며, 반복측정분산분석을 통하여 사전, 사후, 지연 시험의 점수를 비교하였다. 이에 따른 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 형태소를 활용하여 어휘를 학습한 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단에 비하여 목표 어휘를 습득하고 오래 기억하는데 유의미하게 더 좋은 결과를 보여주었다. 둘째, 수업시간을 통해 명시적으로 학습한 형태소적 지식과 인식능력은 한국인 영어학습자들이, 새로운 단어를 마주하였을 때, 보다 더 성공적으로 어휘 뜻을 유추할 수 있었다. 셋째, 비교적 어휘가 풍부한 학생들이 통계적으로 유의미하게 나은 학습효과를 보인 것으로 보아, 형태소를 활용한 어휘학습 방법을 적용하는데 있어서 학습자들의 현재 어휘수준이 중요한 요인임이 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 형태소를 활용한 어휘학습 방법이 외국어 학습자들의 형태학적 민감성을 높여 어휘학습을 도모한다는 이전의 연구들을 뒷받침하며, 수업시간에 명시적으로 학습한 형태학적 지식들이 배운 단어를 기억하고 새로운 단어의 뜻을 유추해 내는 데에 유용한 언어적 자원이 됨을 의미한다.
