This study aims at figuring out comprehensive trends and relations between children's personal(age, gender, sibling, emotional intelligence and aggression) and familial(family income, family structure, internet addition of parents and parenting attitude) variables affecting internet game overindulgence and reviewing relative contribution. According this study purpose, the selected research questions are as follows:
1. How different is children's internet game overindulgence depending on children's personal(age, gender and sibling) and familial(family income and family structure) variables?
1-1 How different is children's internet game overindulgence depending
on children's age, gender and sibling relations, respectively?
1-2 How different is children's internet game overindulgence depending
on children's family income and family structure, respectively?
2. What is the relation between children's personal(emotional intelligence and aggression) and familial(internet addiction of parent and parenting attitude) variables and children's internet game overindulgence?
2-1 What is the relation between children's emotional intelligence and
aggression and children's internet game overindulgence?
2-2 What is the relation between internet addiction of parents and parenting
attitude and children's internet game overindulgence?
3. For children's internet game overindulgence, how is relative contribution between personal and familial variables?
The research was conducted on total 245 children(boy; 108, girl: 137), consisting of 124 three and four-year-olds and 121 five and six-year-olds who attend children's center, kindergarten and elementary school in D city and K region and their parents from April 7th to April 30th, 2014.
The measuring instrument for the study are as follows:
First, in order to study children's internet game overindulgence, internet game addiction trend scale for children and lower grade elementary students(for Parents)(National Information Society Agency, 2006) was used.
Second, for children's emotional intelligence, in order to measure it, 'Children's Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Scale for Teachers' by Kim Kyung Hee(1999) was used.
Third, for measuring children's aggression, Behavioral Checklist (Achenbach and Edelbrock, 1981) and Park Hee Boon's device modifying and supplementing TBC (Toddler Behavior Checklist)(Ambersun and Martin, 1989) were used.
Fourth, in order to investigate parents' internet addition, 'Adult Internet Addiction Self-Report Scale(A-Scale)'(National Information Society Agency, 2006) was used.
Fifth, in order to figure out parenting attitude, the test kit used by Lee Won Young(1983), Kim Im Soon(1992) and Koh Young Mee(1995), translated and adopted version of MBRI(Maternal Behavior Research Instrument) by Schaefer(1959) was used.
In order to verify differences and relations between internet game overindulgence and children's personal and familial variables, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis were conducted and the entire statistical processes were analyzed by using SPSS 20.0.
The study's results are as follows:
First, depending on age(three and four-years-olds and five and six years olds), there were statistically significant differences for children's internet game overindulgence. Five and six-year-olds children showed higher children's internet overindulgence than three and four-year-olds children. Therefore, five and six-year-olds children understand game better and have more active indulgence on it than three and four-year-olds children because of developmental characteristics.
Second, depending on gender of children, for children's internet game overindulgence, there were no statistically significant differences and children's gender and children's internet game overindulgence have no relations.
Third, depending on sibling relations of children, for children's internet game overindulgence, there were statistically significant differences. Compared to having older sisters, younger sisters and younger brothers, in case of having sibling of older brothers, exposure to game was more frequent and then internet game overindulgence became higher.
Fourth, depending on family income, for children's internet game overindulgence, there were statistically significant differences. Therefore, children whose parents are both working showed higher internet game overindulgence than those from family with just one parent makes a living.
Fifth, there were statistically significant differences between family structure and children' internet game overindulgence. Therefore, children from core family showed higher internet game overindulgence than children from extended family
Sixth, there were statistically significant negative correlations between children's emotional intelligence and children's internet game overindulgence. Especially, there was the highest negative correlation with perception on other's emotion among sub-elements of emotional intelligence. Therefore, as children have higher ability to perceive and understand their own and other's emotion and to control their own emotions, their internet game overindulgence was lower.
Seventh, there were statically significant correlations between children's aggression and children's internet game overindulgence. Especially, there was the highest positive correlation with destructive aggression among sub-elements of aggression. Therefore, children with more destructive and aggressive character showed higher internet game overindulgence.
Eight, there were statically significant correlations between parents' internet addiction and children's internet game overindulgence. Especially, there was the highest positive correlations with virtual world-directed among sub-elements of internet addiction of parents. Therefore, children whose parents showed more cyber world-directed characteristics than reality-directed ones showed higher internet game overindulgence.
Ninth, there were no statistically significant correlations between parenting attitude and children's internet game overindulgence and it means that parenting attitude and children's internet game overindulgence had no correlations.
Tenth, for relative contribution between children's internet game overindulgence and children's personal and familial variables, children's emotional intelligence had highest contribution and then internet addiction of parents and children's aggression followed in order. That is, children's internet game overindulgence is affected by personal variables such as children's emotional intelligence and aggression as well as familial variables such as parent's internet addiction.
As a result of the previous studies and this study, children's gender, sibling relations, emotional intelligence, aggression, family structure, internet addiction of parents and parenting attitude have huge influence on children's internet game overindulgence and so parents should guide children with right internet using habit and teachers and children's education facilities should develop internet game overindulgence prevention program based on variables of this study and educate children, in order to make children do safe internet activities.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
