ABSTRACT 140
Every Human has a mental disorder. A series of trials, pains or frustration in life make our minds sick. This study finding answers in this life deals with John Steinbeck's literature-therapy function. It has been performed to treat the crack in contemporaries' minds, to evoke warm heart where a society becomes bleak due to individualism through literature and to help ministers, counselors and researchers on literature therapy by researching vitality of literature in a pastoral counseling way.
Literature has considerable consoling energy for humans. People experience different worlds in poems and novels and find another ego with them being consoled and having courage and hope. Biblical literature also makes people find their ways and grope for truth and has vitality through literature. Finding a touching way through happens with our psychological response. Being impressed is being moved by grasping the thing all over the body. People get to participate in their own and others' life joy through literary impression. In addition, we confirm sorrow and pain and get feelings that they belong to ourselves. This literature can create a life by transforming from pains to hope by captivating people's mind.
This study has examined literature-therapy function through John Steinbeck's literature in a psychoanalytic way. East of Eden is the work which paid attention to human ethics and human inner problems throughout their life. Selfish desire, instinct which resides in human and ethics, causes conflict each other. This conflict often appears in our life. Especially, John Steinbeck shows human greatness and dignity which can be simultaneously practiced with humanity. In the last scene, the figure that breastfeeds a stranger in starvation and makes a mysterious smile, which indicates tenacious vitality despite any ordeal; that is, it enlighten the preciousness of life. It sounds the alarm in a mechanized society which has lost its dignity.
Of Mice and Men is a story of alienated and underprivileged people in society who indicates neglected people being lonely and useless from a society. To be more specific, it describes George Milton and Lennie Small representative of wandering laborers. John Steinbeck illustrates that people have a strong desire to realize a potential dream in their mind but it is not real although a society has a desire to achieve a dream. The human value which cherishes humans is lost though they live eagerly to achieve a dream. Humans are treated as mice and they live like dead mice that owners pet without a dream and hope. However, humans are different from mice. Every human has value and hope although it is simple. Humans have human value. This value is not established in a day and does not exist in human ideology. This human value is to pursue value by themselves and have wishes in this value.
John Steinbeck's literature-therapy function is to awaken people who are treated like mice and lost value in their life without wishes and hope. In other words, it implies that we have a simple dream and hope. Also, in Grapes of Wrath, humans are quoted as having strong vitality within them. It represents that we live with tenacious vitality in our mind like a turtle in spite of any ordeal and pain in our daily circumstance. Also, East of Eden says that we have a way to choose. Which way we chose depends on a free will. However, the result is in charge of ourselves. We can chose either virtue or evil. Both virtue and evil belong to ourselves. Therefore, we stand for virtue not for evil being allied with Jesus Christ.
This study has psychoanalytically examined a literature-therapy function through John Steinbeck's literature. The society has lost humanity and human value in society because of mechanization, and human value and humanity can revive leading to abundant humanity deviating from mammonism. It intends to psychoanalytically treat broken and cracked mind resulting in transforming from desolate society to warm one, which is the society we are dreaming.
We saw microcosm through Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is rooted in the Christian religion, wearing literary clothing and sipping literary atmosphere. That is the union of literature and theology. The faith grows up through literature leading to meeting Jesus. This meeting developing and maturing us. This meeting helps us courageously have a journey in life courageously.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
