재생에너지에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 유기 태양전지에 대한 많은 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 유기 태양전지는 저가의 공정으로 대량생산이 가능하고 유연한 소자를 만들기에 용이하다는 장점이 있다. 하지만, 유기물 자체의 낮은 전환 효율과 짧은 수명은 상용화에 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 본 연구는 유기태양전지의 효율과 수명을 개선시키기 위하여 양극과 음극 사이에 버퍼층을 도입하여 효율과 수명을 획기적으로 개선하였다. 양극 버퍼층으로는 WO₃을 PEDOT:PSS 대체하여 효율과 수명을 개선시켰다. 음극 버퍼층으로는 Yb를 도입하여 효율과 수명을 향상시켰다. 투명전극으로는 WAW에 Yb 버퍼층을 도입한 Yb/WAW 전극을 사용하여 투명 유기태양전지의 가능성을 제시하였다. Impedance spectroscopy를 이용하여 dark 상태와 light 상태에서 carrier 특성을 파악하여 각 유기 태양전지의 소자 특성을 심도 있게 분석하였다.
양극 버퍼층으로 도입한 WO₃는 기존 소자 대비 10% 광전환 효율 상승과 30% 수명향상 효과가 있었다. 음극 버퍼층으로 도입한 Yb는 기존 소자 대비 20% 광전환 효율 상승과 30% 수명향상 효과가 있었다. 투명전극으로 사용한 Yb/WAW 전극은 면저항 8.5 Ω/□과 91%(@550)의 높은 투과율을 가지면서 20% 광전환 효율 상승이 있었다. 이러한 전극 버퍼층은 유기태양전지가 가지는 낮은 효율과 짧은 수명의 문제를 획기적으로 개선할 수 있는 좋은 대안이 된다. 하지만, 유기 태양전지는 10% 이상의 높은 효율 구현이 이론상 어렵다. 최근에는 활성화층으로 폴리머를 대체한 perovskite 물질이 대안으로 제시되고 있는데 이론상 무기물의 30% 대의 높은 효율을 구현할 수 있는 것으로 보고 되고 있다. 본 연구에서 제안한 전극 버퍼물질과 투명전극들은 perovskite 물질과 결합하여 태양전지를 구성한다면 높은 효율과 내구성이 좋은 태양전지를 구현할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
