초록보기

Mary Shelley was a female writer during the 19th century England. At this time, England had lots of changes occurring due to industrialization. Industrialization improved the quality of people's life and led to further development of commerce and agriculture industry. However with this improvement came issues of human alienation, materialism, and immorality. Mary Shelley revealed many of these social problems and social structure by industrialization within her novels. Some of her work critically depicts the lost of morality and the mechanized and androcentric society.

In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley described not only lost of morality but also human alienation through the process of the Monster's growth. Thus, the purpose of thesis is to look for human nature and to investigate the situation of disadvantaged people including women within this novel. Ultimately, the intention of Mary Shelley in Frankenstein is to regain morality while also studying human nature.

The Monster, as the main character in Frankenstein, was created by scientist Victor Frankenstein. When the Monster was created, he was left without a name. The Monster tried to integrate into human society by doing good things. However, the Monster couldn't fully integrate because of his terrible appearance. Due to the people's rejection, the Monster went from an angelic state to that of a devil. The Monster, turning into devil, is symbolizing a society who has lost its morality.

The Monster also represents disadvantaged people and women of the century. The Monster couldn't approach central public areas because of his dreadful appearance. Even though the Monster was created as a man, he can symbolize the women who lived only within their family spaces. The Monster's attempt to be included in society can show women's attempt to break from their situation. As such, Mary Shelley criticizes the androcentric society through the situation of the Monster.

Within the novel, the Monster took revenge on Victor by killing Victor's family and his close friend. Then, the Monster cared for the female after awakening his sense of family. However the Monster's desire failed due to the destruction of the female by Victor. The Monster turned into devil again. The Monster appealed to Victor by outlining that his misdeeds derived from loneliness. Victor realized that excessive desire caused the destruction in and of his life. The Monster's revenge was finished after the death of Victor.

The Monster who was unnaturally born by the scientist lived without parents. Nevertheless, the Monster wanted to belong to human society, but he couldn't. The process of the Monster changing from angel into devil can be explained by J. J. Rousseau's concept of "the goodness of man" Rousseau believes that all of human's nature is good, and it is decided by circumstance, not inborn quality, that produces bad action. Then he emphasizes the important of circumstance, education, and relationship in fostering the goodness of human nature. With this logic, I argue that the Monster's growth process corresponds with Rousseau's theory of "the goodness of human." That being said, Mary Shelley thinks that human nature is goodness and emphasizes the important of circumstance and education within this very novel. These are the messages that Mary Shelley leaves us.
