한국을 비롯한 세계 각국에서 지하수는 중요한 음용수원으로 이용된다. 하지만 지하수에는 물-암석간의 반응으로 인해 자연방사성물질들이 존재할 수 있으며, 자연방사성물질을 함유한 물을 섭취하거나 노출될 경우 방사성물질의 화학적 독성이나 방사선에 의해 건강에 유해할 수 있다. 이 연구는 한국의 지하수 내 자연방사성물질이 개인의 건강과 관련 산업에 끼칠 수 있는 잠재적 영향을 파악하기 위해 수행되었다.
2006 년부터 2014 년까지 채취한 4140 개의 지하수 시료 결과를 이용하여 지하수 내 자연방사성물질의 분포를 규명하였다. 총 160 개 시료에서 WHO 에서 지정한 음용수 내 우라늄 기준인 30 ㎍ L-1 을 초과한 것으로 나타났다. 초과 지점들 중 약 70%가 경기도와 충청 지역의 심성암 지역에 분포하고 있었다. 용존 우라늄의 존재 형태에 대한 모델링 결과, uranyl carbonate 종이 가장 우세한 것으로 예측되어 한국의 지하수 환경에서 우라늄의 유동성과 위해도를 증가시킬수 있을 것이라 예측되었다.
전국적으로 최대 약 13만명이 수질기준 초과 우라늄을 섭취할 우려가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 우라늄 함유 지하수의 섭취에 따른 위해성 평가 결과, 화학적 독성에 의한 위해성은 WHO 권고치를 최소 2 배 이상 초과하였고, 방사능에 의한 영향은 수중 우라늄 농도가 200 ㎍ L-1을 초과하는 경우 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 방사능에 의한 영향이 발생하는 지역은 전국적으로 24 개소에서 발견되었으며, 대부분이 음용수로 이용되는 관정이므로 폐공과 같은 즉각적인 조치가 수반되어야 할 것이다.
지하수 내 자연방사성물질의 먹는 샘물 공장의 필터 내 농축여부를 평가하기 위해 13개 공장을 대상으로 연구를 수행하였다.
라돈을 제외한 모든 항목들이 수질기준 미만이었으며, 라돈은 모든 공장의 처리수에서 감소하였으며, 특히 원수 저장탱크를 지나면서 큰 폭으로 감소하였다. 라돈은 원수저장조에서 탈기되어 감소한 것으로 추정된다. 우라늄은 활성탄필터가 있는 공장에서만 감소현상이 발견되었다. 일부 공장에서 활성탄처리를 하였음에도 우라늄이 감소하지 않은 것은 활성탄 필터의 사용기간에 제거 효율 저하로 추정된다. 표면방사선율 측정 결과, 배경치보다 최대 18 배 높은 방사선이 측정되었으며, 필터 유형과 관계없이 공정 초반에 위치한 필터들에서 높은 방사선을 방출하는 것으로 나타났다. 사용 후 필터의 분석 결과, Pb-210이 최대 20 Bq g-1까지 검출되는 등, 지하수 내 자연방사성 물질들이 필터에 농축되었음을 확인하였다. 표면방사선율의 측정 결과와 마찬가지로 공정 초반에 위치한 필터들에서 핵종들의 함량이 훨씬 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 검출된 핵종들은 U-238의 딸핵종이나, 각각의 물질들의 반감기와 붕괴 사슬에서의 위치를 감안하면, 라돈의 붕괴에서 기인하였을 가능성이 더 큰 것으로 판단된다.
사용 후 필터의 분석 결과 3개 업체의 필터에서 공정부산물 내 방사능 기준인 1 Bq g-1을 초과하였고, 1개 업체는 배출량기준인 연간 1000 kBq을 초과하였다. 현재까지 공정부산물은 일반폐기물로 처리되고 있으며, 이에 대한 잠재적 영향에 대한 조사가 수행된 바 없다. 따라서, 공정부산물의 인체 영향에 대한 조사와 행정 당국의 적절한 통제 관리가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
