ABSTRACT 60

초록보기

Beethoven was a composer during a transition from Classicism to Romanticism and showed a mature creative world both in form and content through various changes and attempts in his later works. Of many different genres that he touched, string quartets offer important clues to understand his music throughout his life. This study thus set out to examine the formation and development of string quartets from the classical period to the days of Beethoven, his life and musical styles, and the changes to the style of his string quartets, analyzing his string quartet piece titled Op. 131, No. 14 around various musical elements.

The piece consists of seven movements, each of which is not separated but connected. He employed diverse forms for each movement including fugue, rondo, sonata, and two-part ones. The entire work is organically connected with the theme of Movement 1 in the fugue form

being reproduced in the last movement of sonata form, Movements 3 and 6 serving as the introduction of Movements 4 and 7, respectively, and both

characteristics including the formation of tension through modulation, irregular phrases, various tempo and rhythm changes, imitative counterpoint composition, and rapid motif changes.

Those findings of research on his 〈Op. 131 No. 14〉 indicate that Beethoven grew out of the traditional frameworks of classical period when writing his later string quartets and made an attempt at diverse innovative musical languages for those days, thus establishing a new base for the development of romantic string quartets.
