Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of empathy enhancement program on empathic awareness, interpersonal relationship, and communication of nursing students who are preparing clinical practice and to improve of empathic ability and nursing competency. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 59 sophomore students in the department of nursing at a college. Experimental group (n＝29), which received the empathy enhancement program 8 times for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed using chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and repeated measurement ANOVA with IBM SPSS version 21.0. Results: After the empathy enhancement program including patient experience the experimental group showed significant increase in empathic awareness, interpersonal relationship, and communication compared to the control group. The empathy enhancement program was effective in increasing empathic awareness, interpersonal relationship, and communication of nursing students. Conclusion: The empathy enhancement program including patient experience could be effective in strengthening of empathic capability of the nursing students so that they can adapt to the clinical practice.
