The study of 'space' has attracted constant interest in the field of cognitive semantics. In particular, the study of the meaning of the spatial concept and linguistic means to express the spatial concept has been continued. However, the study of the spatial concept vocabulary in Korean and Japanese languages has been often carried out as individual languages. Especially comparative and contrastive studies on Korean and Japanese languages are rarely conducted in practice. It is true that there have been many studies only focusing on basic ways to use, semantically asymmetric phenomenon, and morphological features.
Therefore, it can be said that this study has special meaning since it approaches from contrastive linguistics standpoint beyond the traditional method of study and analyzes the aspect of meaning extension of the same spatial concept vocabulary by comparing both Korean and Japanese languages, particularly targeting the front and back, up and down, and inside and outside spatial vocabulary both in Korean and Japanese languages, and also combines cultural backgrounds of Korea and Japan for discussion. This way, the study was carried out with certain expectation that the study results could help Korean and Japanese language learners understand various extension meaning of spatial vocabulary and make good use of proper vocabulary.
In pursuing the study, defining the concept to clarify meanings was considered to be more important than others. It was necessary to make ambiguousness of division clear because there are a lot of meanings with similarities in spatial vocabulary. To clarify the concept of meaning scope, three different Korean and Japanese language dictionaries were analyzed in order to collect dictionary definition of spatial concept vocabulary included in the dictionaries, and each meaning system and consequent usage were also examined. Examining dictionary definition, similarities and differences between the polysemous meaning aspects in dictionary definitions of spatial concept vocabulary in Korean and Japanese languages were also studied to clarify the definite scope of meaning that can be compared and see the aspects of extension meaning and those usages.
'Space' is the most fundamental environment where human behaviors are made, and the concept of space is formed through repetitive physical experience. This means, based on the human ability to perceive, position, direction, and movement of an object which relates with space are perceived as repetitive experience, and this becomes fundamental experience and scope in human's physical experiences. Furthermore, it will also become the conceptual foundation which enables understanding and construction of more abstract and complicated concepts. Especially spatial concept gets conceptualized as language through ceaseless interaction between an object and perceived space, and this is expressed as 'spatial concept vocabulary'. And in the study, it was confirmed that both Korean and Japanese languages do have the transition process of the meaning of physical space that extends into the meaning of temporal relation, and then, into the abstract meaning, through the relation of an object with position or space. It was also confirmed that the vocabulary which has gone through this meaning extension tends to extend into varied correlative meanings. Meanwhile, the study found that although those meanings in Korean and Japanese languages have similar systems, they don't develop into the same aspects.
In this way, the study suggests the foundation for estimation of proper usage of vocabulary in both languages by systematically approaching the aspects of meaning extension of spatial concept vocabulary and meaning usage in Korean and Japanese languages from contrastive linguistics standpoint and further, laying the groundwork to clearly observe the usage of vocabulary meaning. The results of the study is expected to help Korean or Japanese language learners as a foreign language get the clear concept of meanings and understand proper vocabulary. Furthermore, it could provide comprehensive and practical materials for the establishment of the meanings of various spatial concept vocabularies based on the contrastive study of both Korean and Japanese languages.*표시는 필수 입력사항입니다.
