ABSTRACT 76

초록보기

This study analyzes "Cello Sonata No.1 in e minor, op.38" composed by Johannes Brahms(1833-1897). He is one of the famous composer of the Romanticism.

Nevertheless, Johannes Brahms is belong to Romanticism, he takes a stance on Classic period: emphasizes musical form and purity of music, etc. I adopt "Cello sonata No.1 in e minor, op.38", Johannes Brahms's the first cello sonata, composed for cello and piano, a valid example for analyzing his feature of composing.

"Cello Sonata No.1 in e minor, op.38" contains a lot of Johannes Brahms's features of composing. It seems like a sort of Classic period, because of the title, and musical form, but looking into the piece, it includes some of mainstream compositional techniques of Romanticism, such as use of chromatic harmonies, various irregular rhythms, and syncopations.

This cello sonata piece is consists of three movements; The first movement is in sonata form, a traditional form of Classic period, that played on e minor with tempo, Allegro non troppo. The second movement is a complex three-part form of A-B-A sections, that played on a minor with tempo, Allegretto quasi Menuetto. The third movement, that played on e minor with tempo, Allegro, is also a complex three-part form, but it has A-B-A' structure and that has Coda in the last. This movement takes the Fugue, a technique of composition, blooming in Baroque period.

In conclusion, Johannes Brahms constructs his own style of composition with the compositional techniques of Romanticism based on the notions of Classic period. This is the reason why though he was a composer who persist of tradition, he definitely was a Romanticism composer.

I hope that this study of Johannes Brahms's "Cello sonata No.1 in e minor, op.38" helped those who encountered this piece to understand the emotions and compositional techniques contained in the piece, and furthermore, not only Johannes Brahms's other chamber music works but also Brahms's music works.
