This project is an investigation of Isang Yun's Seven Etudes for solo cello (1993), as well as the composer's life and compositional techniques. A Korean-German composer who studied with many leading composers, Yun was himself a cellist and held great esteem for the instrument. These etudes are both musically rewarding and of pedagogical value for cellists seeking familiarity with techniques of twentieth century cello playing.

The first chapter of the work describes Isang Yun's life, compositional style, and the role the cello played in his development and compositions. The second and third provide an overview and brief analysis of the Seven Etudes, and the final chapter provides final thoughts about Yun's life and music.

Yun was politically active, and his compositions have often been overshadowed by his activism. It is my hope that this project will shed new light on these unique and valuable works, providing both inspiration for further investigation and a strong grounding for those who wish to perform the Seven Etudes or the composer's other works.

이 논문은 윤이상의 7개의 첼로를 위한 연습곡에 대한 연구를 중점으로 그의 삶과 작곡기법을 기록하였다. 한국-독일인 작곡가인 그는 첼로에 대한 남다른 애정이 있었고, 첼리스트로 알려져있다. 짤즈부르크에서의 그의 강의 내용을 보면 그의 첼로 협주곡은 그 자신을 표현하는 곡이었다고 한다. 그의 유년시절에 대한 기억과 정치적 현실/고통을 반영했음을 알 수 있다. 윤이상의 작품들을 보면 첼로 작품 뿐 아니라 첼로가 들어간 앙상블 작품이 많다는 것도 확인할 수 있다. 현악기 중에서는 바이올린이 포함된 곡이 많이 작곡 되었지만, 3명 이상 포함된 앙상블 작품에서는 첼로가 들어간 작품수가 가장 많다.

이 연습곡은 첼리스를 위한 곡으로 음악학적으로뿐 아니라 교육학적으로서의 가치를 갖고, 20세기 첼로연주자가 할 수 있는 테크닉을 계발 할 수 있도록 작곡되었다.

제 1장에서는 윤이상의 인생과 작곡 양식, 그리고 그의 작품들 중에서 첼로라는 악기의 역할에 대해 기록했다. 제 2장과 3장은 7개의 첼로 연습곡에 대한 개요를 설명하고 분석했다. 그리고 제 4장에서는 윤이상의 삶과 음악에 대한 저자의 생각을 정리했다.

윤이상은 정치적으로 매우 활발하게 활동했다고 기록된다. 그 때문에 그의 작곡가로서의 업적이 가리워지기도 했다. 이 논문을 통해 이 7개의 연습곡과 그의 다른 작품을 이해하고 연주하는데 필요한 자료가 되기를 바란다. 또한 윤이상의 독특한 음악적 기법이 더 많이 알려지고, 미래적인 음악적 세계관을 갖기에 도움이 되기를 바란다.
