The nuclear power options has been rapidly declined because of the interaction of economic, technological, and social difficulties. The paper critically reviews major rationals of nuclear policies that have perpetuated the construction of nuclear power plants in Korea.The inevitability view on more nuclear power plant is reviewed by arguing that changes in the mix of power plant operations could make electricity supply sufficient without constructing new nuclear power plants except peak time. For the peak time, the planned construction of LNG power plant can cover these insufficiency. It was found that stable and sufficient electricity could be supplied through implementing the cost effective options of energy efficiency even if new nuclear power plants were not constructed.Given the current trends such as decline of renewable energy cost, world shift to renewable energy, and push pressure of nuclear energy costs, Korea need to redirect energy policy to renewable energy system. But energy transition policies could not be expected as long as existing energy policy take the increase of nuclear power for granted.It also reviews the economics of nuclear power. Contrary to policy argument, the paper suggests that their economics cannot be assured, if only demolition cost and interest rate can be changed. The sociopolitical cost related to radioactive waste makes the economics of nuclear power much more worse.
