The purpose of this paper is to examine how and why British nuclear policy has changed in light of independency and/or dependency on the U.S.A. According to this analysis, British nuclear policy has changed three times since World War Ⅱ. In particular, this analysis shows the linkage between the Anglo-American special relationship and the changes of British nuclear policy. That is to say, there is a pattern that the more the Anglo-American special relationship weakens, the more the independency of British nuclear policy strengthens and the more the Anglo-American special relationship strengthens, the more the dependency of British nuclear policy on the U.S.A. strengthens.

From this point of view, Great Britain will pursue limited multilateral nuclear cooperation on the basis of the Anglo-American special relationship and NATO centric nuclear policy even in the 21st century. So, how to solve the structural dilemma between independency and dependency on the U.S.A. will remain one of the issues that Great Britain must face. At any rate, Great Britain's case previews that the changes of a state's nuclear policy depends on the ups and downs of an alliance relationship.
