본 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 영아들의 가상놀이 발달과 문화 및 교육적 맥락과의 연관성을 규명하고자 문화기술 연구를 수행하였다. 분석에서는 활동을 단위로 영아들과 교사들의 상호작용에 관련된 데이터를 조직하여 두 문화권에서 비교할 수 있는 주제들을 추출하여 해석하였다. 두 문화권의 가상놀이 발달의 특징은 유사성이 많았으며, 환상내러티브의 발달과 사회성의 발달은 교육적 맥락에 의해 영향을 받았다. 따라서, 영아의 가상놀이 발달에서 교육적, 문화적 맥락의 영향은 영역특수성(domain-specificity)을 띤다고 할 수 있다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 가상놀이의 환상내러티브와 사회성 발달을 위해 교사의 역할이 중요하다는 것을 시사하고 있다.

This study investigated the relationship of cultural and educational contexts and the development of pretend play in toddlers from an ethnographical approach between two cultures, namely the United States and Korea. For the purposes of data analysis, units of activity were used and the social interactions of each activity were then organized. The common themes in evidence within both cultures were then interpreted. There were many similarities in terms of pretend play between the two cultures. However, there were also some differences in pretend play in evidence. These differences were seen in terms of play which revolved around fantasy play as well as play related to social development, both of which are areas which were influenced by the roles of teachers.
