In Korea, controlling age, family background, health, occupation, and education, the hourly wage rate increases by 1.0% per centimeter with height for male wage workers of age 30∼49, by 0.7% for female wage workers of age 30∼49, and by 0.9% for female wage workers of age 20∼29. We find that height increases the wage rate through education among male and female workers of age 30∼49. The height premium of female wage workers of age 20∼29 is scarcely affected by family background, health, occupation, and education. If ones with 23 or higher body mass index are classified as obese, obese ones are more paid than non-obese ones among male wage workers of age 30∼49, but obese ones are less paid than non-obese ones among female wage workers of age 30∼49. Among male wage workers of 30∼49, the wage increases with BMI until 25.6 and then decreases, so that the BMI-wage profile is concave. Since the criterion of obesity is BMI of 23, which is lower than 25.6, the coefficient of obesity (D) is positively estimated. However, among female wage workers of 30∼49, the BMI-wage profile is nrgatively linear. so that the coefficient of obesity (D) negatively estimated. Since men have larger frames than women, obese men by our criterion may not seem to be obese, we can have such estimation for men. However, the slimmer women are, the more they are paid. Among female wage workers of 20∼29, the wage increases with BMI until 19.6 and then decreases, so that the BMI-wage profile is concave. Since the criterion of obesity is BMI of 23, which is higher than 19.6, the coefficient of obesity (D) is negatively estimated. This estimated coefficient is –0.193, which is lower than –0.083 for female wage workers of age 30∼49 although their difference is not statistically significant. This is why women of 20∼29 pay more attention to their figures than other groups. Among male and female wage workers, respectively, their obesity does not statistically significantly affect their wage after controlling their family backgrounds, health, occupation, and education. That is, the obesity affects the wage indirectly through educational and occupational choice, but does not statistically significantly affect the wage. However, Among female wage workers of age 20∼29, the obesity affects the wage not only indirectly through educational and occupational choice, but also directly. The wage obese ones are paid lower by 13.0% than non-obese ones after controlling those variables. We confirm again that the obesity discount of female wage workers of age 20∼29 is why they are much more concerned about their figures than other groups. The exogeneity of obesity is not rejected for all groups.
