암의 만성화에 따라 삶의 질 유지와 증진은 치료와 개입의 목표가 되어왔다. 이에 따라 삶의 질에 예측요인과 이들의 관계를 이해하는 것은 임상현장에서 매우 중요한 이슈가 되고 있다. 하지만 기존 연구들은 병리적 모델에 토대를 두고 암환자의 심각한 고통에 초점을 두어 이에 대한 온전한 이해를 도모하는데 한계가 있어왔다. 이에 암이라는 역경을 통해 긍정적 변화를 이루어내는 외상후성장(posttraumatic growth)이 심각한 스트레스(stress) 상황에 처한 암환자의 삶의 질에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 조절효과를 중심으로 조사하였다. 암환자 191명을 대상으로 설문조사 실시한 결과 암환자의 삶의 질에 대해 스트레스, 외상후성장이 직접효과가 있었으며, 외상후성장은 스트레스가 삶의 질에 미치는 부정적 영향을 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 삶의 질의 다차원성을 고려하여 신체적, 기능적, 사회적, 정서적 삶의 질로 구분하여 외상후성장의 조절효과를 보다 면밀하게 검토한 결과 외상후성장은 정서적 삶의 질에서만 유의한 조절효과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 암환자의 삶의 질 증진을 위해 가장 강력한 예측요인인 스트레스를 완화할 수 있는 방안으로 외상후성장을 도모하는 사회복지실천을 마련해야 하며 이러한 개입을 통해 정서적 삶의 질을 높이는데 기여할 수 있다는 함의를 도출하였다. 이러한 연구의 함의와 함께 후속연구에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.

Improving and maintaining the quality of life had always been the objective of treatment as well as intervention for chronic cancer. Because of this, understanding predictive factor their correlation to quality of life has become an important issue in the medical field. However, previous research attempts were limited to pathologic models focusing on serious pain that cancer patients go through. This study was aimed at revealing the moderating effects of post-traumatic growth on the quality of life of cancer patients under severe stress. After conducting a survey of 191 cancer patients, stress and post-traumatic growth are found to have direct effect on their quality of life. Another finding was that post-traumatic growth can control the negative effects on quality of life. In consideration of its multi-dimensionality, quality of life was broken down into physical, functional, social and emotional aspects. As the result of careful examination, it has been concluded that post-traumatic growth shows that it only has moderating effects on emotional quality of life. Based on this result, it has been concluded that efforts should be made to promote post-traumatic growth which is a strong predictor of lessening stress for better quality of life for the cancer patients. Through this intervention, it will be possible to contribute to raising the quality of life of cancer patients. With such implications regarding the research, advice for the next step of research had been suggested.
