Der Gemeinsame Europaische Referenzrahmen und das Europaische Sprachenportfolio sind europaische Dokumente und wurden aus ganz bestimmten politischen Uberlegungen entwickelt und verbreitet. Dennoch haben diese Dokumente eine großere Reichweite als zunachst angenommen. Ihr Einfluss reicht langst uber die Grenzen Europas hinaus. Auch in Japan wird seit einigen Jahren uber die Eignung des GER und die dahinter stehenden ? europaischen ? Zielsetzungen diskutiert. Dieser Artikel setzt sich mit den Moglichkeiten und Grenzen des Einsatzes des ESPs im Deutschunterricht in Japan auseinander. Das Beispiel Deutschunterricht in Japan soll hier exemplarisch fur nicht-europaischer Lander stehen, in denen moglicherweise ahnliche Fragestellungen und Probleme hinsichtlich der Anwendungsmoglichkeiten des GER und des ESPs bestehen.The Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP) are documents to standardize language education and enhance language learning in the European states. However, the influence of these documents has crossed European borders. The use of the CEFR and its related documents for foreign language education has been debated in Japan in the past few years. This article focuses on the use of the ELP for Teaching German as a Foreign Language in Japanese universities. This shall be seen as an example for the situation of non-European countries, since elsewhere similar questions and problems might occur when trying to assign the latest European language policies.
The article starts with a short introduction of the ELP, followed by the discussion of whether its reporting function is appropriate for Japan or not. The meaning of plurilingualism for Japan and the understanding of communication is then discussed. The author concludes that the actual use of the ELP for foreign language education in Japan lies in its pedagogical function. This is shown through interviews with students who worked with the ELP. Last but not least, she introduces a new function of the ELP, providing language maintenance, which is most relevant for learners far away from the target language country.
