Politeness is one device for showing respect and honouring one’s dialogue partner. In case of foreign language teaching and learning, a foreign language learner, who gets necessarily in contact with a foreign culture, does not only have to learn new linguistic structures, but also different communicative strategies. In this context politeness as one way of showing respect and honor to other people plays a role within the foreign language curriculum.
As a learner of Korean as a Foreign language in Germany and in Korea, I had to go through a lot of difficulties when learning how to be polite and show respect to others in Korean. The most difficult parts were especially the complex forms of address and the way of showing respect and honoring my Korean counterpart, because in comparison to Korean, German does not offer as many forms of address as Korean. Additionally, as a teacher of German as a Foreign language I recognized that learning politeness in German also seems a bit more complex than it seems at first glance.
So the main question in the following article is whether and how politeness plays a role within the curriculum of German as a Foreign language. For this reason, there will be given a brief overview regarding the definition and the notion of politeness, that has changed during the last centuries. After that follows a short summary of the characteristic features of politeness in Korean and in German and as already mentioned, especially the Korean forms of address are more complex than the German forms.
Last but not least, there will be analysed how politeness plays a role within the curriculum of German as a Foreign language. Therefore there will be taken a closer look at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at first, since this paper is nowadays regarded as guidance for teaching and learning foreign languages within the European Union and beyond. Finally there will be given some examples selected from some German textbooks dealing with politeness.
It can be summarizes that in general, politeness within the curriculum of German as a Foreign language plays a more subordinate role than within the curriculum of Korean as a Foreign language due to different grammatical and pragmatical structures. In the beginner level of German as a Foreign language, however, the different forms of address in certain situations are learned as well as some grammatical structures like the subjunctive.
