Two methods can be used effectively for the synthetic study of Bach's church cantatas. The one is dividing the works by the periods of Bach's life and observing the development process of the composition technique and the music structure. The other is classifying the works by the musical and textual style and arranging them systematically. In this article I will use the second method. In the first half of the paper, Bach's cantatas are analyzed in four categories: solo cantatas are set apart from the choral cantatas according to the part construction; two section cantatas from the common cantatas according to the performance type; the dialog cantatas from the lyric cantatas according to the textual structure; the parodi cantatas from the original church cantatas according to the musical source; and the Bible text cantatas from the chorale cantatas and the poem text cantatas according to the textual source. In the second half of the article, four types of cantata movements are explored, including instrumental movements, chorus movements, solo voice movements(aria, recitative etc.) and ensemble movements(duet, trio, vocal quartet). The focus of analysis is on the role of each movement in the entire work.
