초록보기

In Korean, the same dative marker -eykey is used for the causee NP in causatives and the agent NP in passives, contributing to the ambiguity between causative and passive readings. Despite the surface similarity, however, we show that two dative NPs behave differently with respect to three syntactic processes: relativization, topicalization without the original marker, and dative/accusative alternation. Based on these observations, we suggest that two dative NPs have a different syntactic status: the dative NP in the causative functions like an indirect object in ditransitive constructions, while the dative NP in the passive has properties of an adjunct.
