A study of electron spin resonance (ESR) of conduction electrons in a fine metalic surface revealed spin-orbitcoupling. This coupling results in a dynamic electron spin susceptibility and, hence, in a reciprocal line shift; i.e., the line shape of the ESR spectrum of a fine metalic surface broadens due to spin-orbit coupling. By studying the broadening, useful information can be obtained concerning the scatering mechanism of a metalic system. Utilizing the projected quantum Liouvile equation method with an ensemble average projection scheme (EAPS), we calculated the scatering factor of ESR for the spin-orbit interacting system. These functions included the line shift and the line half-width for a resonance system. Thus, the scatering factor that was derived using the EAPS is more precise than Kawabata's result and the approximation L → Ld that Kawabata made is not neded here. Therefore, the EAPS method is considered to be more useful for explaining the scatering mechanism, as is the case of other magneto-optical transition problems.
