본 논문은 하나님의 섭리와 우연 혹은 운명의 관계성을 개혁주의 관점에서 고찰한다. 개혁주의 교회는 하나님을 무에서 존재로 부르시는 단회적인 창조의 일시적인 주체만이 아니라 창조의 지속적인 보존과 주권적인 통치의 주체로도 생각하는 포괄적인 섭리론을 주장한다.

그리고 이 세상에서 하나님의 주권적인 섭리를 벗어나는 어떠한 존재도 없고 어떠한 사건도 없고 어떠한 사태도 없다고 생각한다. 이런 맥락에서 개혁주의 신학에는 당연히 우연이나 운명이란 개념이 들어설 신학적 빈공간은 없다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 이차적인 원인들의 본성에 따른 자유나 우연적인 일들에 대해서도 그런 현상 자체의 실존을 부정하진 않았다. 다만 우연이나 운명처럼 보이는 것들이 실제로는 하나님의 섭리가 인간의 머리로는 추적되지 않도록 은밀하고 오묘하게 작용하고 있지만 외관상 우연인 것처럼 보일 뿐이라고 하였다. 즉 이차적인 원인들의 자유와 우연성의 실존을 부정하지 않으면서 하나님의 주권적인 섭리도 포기하지 않았다는 이야기다. 이에 본 논문은 특별히 존 칼빈을 비롯하여 개혁주의 전통의 형성과 발전에 적잖게 공헌한 아만두스 폴라누스(Amandus Polanus), 윌리엄 트위스(William Twisse) 및 웨스트민스터 신앙고백, 그리고 프란시스 튜레틴(Francis Turretin)의 섭리론을 다루면서 앞서 언급한 우연과 섭리에 대한 종교개혁 및 정통주의 시대의 개혁주의 입장을 고찰하며 그것에 얽힌 오해를 해소하려 한다.

This paper deals with the relation between chance and divine providence from Reformed perspective, examining the thoughts of Calvin, Polanus, Twisse, and Turretin on the issue. The Reformed thinkers, including Calvin, did not allow any pagan concept of“fate” or “chance” to invade the Christian truth. For them, those happenings that have seemingly free and contingent causality must be the actualization of God’s infallible decree done in a mysterious way. According to Calvin in particular, all things, such as plans, wills, efforts, and powers of humans, good or evil, are under God’s unfathomable counsel so that there is nothing that happens by chance. He, however, made great effort not to ascribe the substance and responsibility of evil to God. After Calvin, the Reformed orthodox of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries took the term “fatum Christianum” to describe the mysterious things and events having causes unknown to human sight and meeting the need of accurate reasoning in their age. In order to exposit the relationship of God’s providence and human freedom, they employed several distinctions: physical and internal necessity, necessity of coaction, and necessity of hypothetical event or dependence; necessity of the contingent and necessity of contingency; and absolute necessity and relative necessity. Their assumption and introduction of those philosophical distinctions to Reformed theology did not result in the rhetorical abuse or an idle ideological argument, much more not pointing to the academic decadence of truth or departure from Reformation theology. In the mater of divine providence, they aimed neither to go beyond the limit that Scripture draws nor to be silent of whatever Scripture says so that the Reformed view of divine providence may not be endorsed by human discerning but by the testimony of Scripture.
