이 글은 대표적 SNS의 하나인 페이스북 이용자들을 중심으로 개인들이 온라인 세계에서 매개된 상호작용, 곧 서로 얼굴을 마주하지 않고 일어나는 상호작용 가운데 어떻게 자신을 연출하는지 살펴본다. 우리는 SNS 공간이 물질 공간과 분리되어 존재함으로 인해 나타나는 ‘경계 없는 무대(borderless-stage)’와 ‘비몰입(non-involvement)’ 상황이란 특성에 주목하여, 어빙고프먼이 진행한 무대의 전면과 후면의 분리, 팀의 분리, 상호몰입과 같은 상호작용에 대한 논의의 재구성을 시도한다.
SNS 공간에서 자아를 연출하는 개인, 곧 페이스북 이용자들은 오프라인에서 물리적⋅시간적으로 분리되어 있던 팀들의 경계가 사라진 무대에서 연기를 진행하기 때문에 면대면 상황에서상호작용의 흐름에 따라 즉각적으로 반응하는 행위자들과는 달리, 보다 주의 깊게 자신을 연출한다. 비몰입의 결과 상호작용 참여자들은 대화의 지속과 마무리 시점 파악에 보다 면밀한 주의를 요하게 되며, ‘예의바른 무관심’을 통한 인상 관리가 중요해진다. 이용자들은 ‘태그하기’라는 기술적 방법을 이용해 그 순간 상호작용하고자 하는 특정한 팀을 지정하고, 그것을 가시화함으로써 팀의 복수화로 인해 겪게 되는 관객 분리의 어려움을 극복하고자 한다. 또한 ‘모두에게 말하기’와 같은 ‘초점 없는 상호작용(non-focused interaction)’을 진행함으로써 복수 자아의 딜레마를 피하고자 한다.This study investigates the presentation of self in online wold; how individuals present themselves in the technologically mediated, ‘faceless’ interaction based on the content analysis of 12 Facebook accounts and the interviews with the account holders. We characterize the online environment as the ‘borderless stage’ and ‘non-involvement situation,’ and attempt to reconstruct Erving Goffman’s discussion on social interaction such as the division of front-stage and back-stage, the separation of teams and the mutual involvement.
The key finding of the research is that whereas individuals acting in the face-to-face situation are able to respond spontaneously following the flow of interaction, Facebook users present more carefully the idealized selves since they act on the borderless stage in which multiple teams coexist. In the ‘non-involvement situation,’ participants in the interaction are required to figure out how they proceed and when they stop the interaction, and to use the ‘impression management’ skills such as ‘civil inattention.’ By employing ‘tagging’ and visualizing it, Facebook users designate the team they want to interact with and try to overcome the difficulty of audience separation. And as they proceed the ‘non-focused interaction,’ Facebook users try to avoid the dilemma of ‘several selves’
