근대의 사유 체계는 이성중심주의에 기반하며, 이성중심주의는 이상적인 관념을 정점으로 총체적인 서열의 체계로 이루어진 거대 담론을 형성한다. 따라서 근대의 사유 체계는 필연적으로 타자화를 수반한다. 본 논문은 근대의 공간에서 형성된 ‘비극’과 ‘비극성’의 개념이 타자화를 전제로 한다는 점을 직시하고, 탈근대적인 관점에서 ‘비극성’을 재정의해 보고자 하였다. 본 논문은 탈근대적인 인문학 담론의 중요한 논자로 거론되는 들뢰즈와 가타리가 창안한 ‘기계’와 ‘추상기계’의 개념을 활용하여 비극성의 문제를 접근해 보고자 했다. 요컨대, 본 논문은 비극을 ‘비극-기계’의 관점에서 바라볼 때 비극성은 어떻게 재정의 될 수 있으며, 연극사를 기술하는 데 어떤 변화가 일어나는지 고찰하였다.

The tragic is a problematic issue for the researchers who write the history of the Korean theater because the Korean tradition of theater doesn't have the tragedy in the sense of the word that Aristotle defines it in his book, The Poetics. Aristotle defines the tragedy based on a series of aesthetic formula which cannot be found in other culture than the ancient Greek culture and the western culture who has transmitted the Greek. Aesthetic formula constituted by Aristotle has not the universality in the proper sense of the word because it is composed in reference to a specific cultural phenomena that is of the ancient Greece. However it has been considered as a universal formula that should play the role of the criterion to estimate the quality of each culture of the world so that leaded to otherize the other culture than the western, which made the Korean culture a victim. This paper has the objective of creating a new conception of the 'tragedy' which could implicate the universality in the proper sense of the word. The machine and the abstract machine created by Deleuze and Gattari help us to do it. They help us to access everything in the point of function instead of form. Deleuze and Gattari introduce the term of the machine replacing the concepts of the object or the substance of the classic philosophy to explicate the world. According to Deleuze and Gattari, all the things that operate the same function are the same machine. Such an argument helps us to be able to define an object not on the base of the form but the function, which leads us to define an object in the manner which is free from otherization. Using the concepts of the machine and the abstract machine, this paper could redefine the tragedy in a new manner which is free from otherization and has the university in the proper sense of the word. Such a new concept related to tragedy suggests a new way to write the history of the Korean theater which has no more the risk of otherizing itself.
