Viewing Korean Image through 19th Century Pictorials : Photos of Korean Expedition in Harper’s Weekly in 1871
Chen Chi-Sung
In 19th century, western pictorials published a lot of illustration of Asia, Choson Peninsula remained its isolated stance and known as “hermit’s kingdom” to Westerners. Felice Beato was the first photographer who accompanied the American expedition to Korea in 1871, shot the probably world’s first photos of Choson people. These pictures soon were published in newspapers and arouse wide attention.
However, the pictures published in the western pictorials are sometimes been edited and retouched, not always the exact reprint of the original picture. Though trimming and adjusting the original picture was not rare in 19th century pictorials, the selection of pictures and the report stance still somehow revealed the specific political and cultural stance of the newspaper. In this article, the famous American pictorial, Harper’s Weekly will be taken as an example, showing that how analyzing Western-made Asian image could be the important method in revealing the mechanism of cultural interaction in 19th century.
