Beginning with the inquiry “whether Bach preaches Lutheran theology through musical compositions,” this article examines the composer’s cantatas of his Leipzig period from two aspects. The first part looks at the liturgical contexts of these cantatas. The second part emphasizes on music analysis to discuss the religious meanings coded in the music. While it is a common formulation to entitle Bach’s church cantatas “music sermons,” a congruent system to decipher the religious meanings of his music is not yet found in the scholarship.

이 논문은 J. S. 바흐가 자신의 작품을 통해 루터교를 전파하였는지에 대한 연구를 위해 라이프치히 시기에 작곡된 바흐의 칸타타 작품을 두 가지 측면에서 접근해 보았다. 먼저, 이 칸타타 작품들이 지닌 전례적 의미를 살펴보았다.

칸타타는 신자들에게 더 많은 복음을 학습할 수 있는 기회 제공의 목적으로 만들어진 모테트로부터 발전하였다. 그러나 단순히 성서의 구절을 강조하는데 그쳤던 모테트와는 달리, 칸타타는 그것들을 더 자세히 설명하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이어, 음악 분석을 통해 음악 속에서 암호화된 종교적 의미를 논의하였다. 이 논의를 설명하기 위해 부코프처(Manfred Bukofzer), 세이프(Eric Chafe), 슐렌베르그(David Schulenberg) 그리고 로이드(Rebecca Lloyd) 등 여러 학자들의 다양한 해석과 서로 다른 시각을 다루었다.

본 논문이 제시한 “바흐, 설교자인가 신학자인가?”라는 질문이 물음표가 아닌 마침표로 마무리 짓게 되기를 기대한다.
