본 연구는 성인애착과 외로움의 관계에서 거절민감성과 자존감의 매개효과를 알아보았다. 이를 위해 대학신입생 353명을 대상으로 성인애착의 두 차원(애착불안, 애착회피)이 거절민감성과 자존감을 매개로 하여 외로움에 직간접적으로 영향을 주는 인과적 구조모형을 설정하고 모형의 적합도 및 개별 변인의 영향력을 살펴보았다. 연구결과에 따르면, 측정모형은 자료에 적합한 것으로 나타났으며, 성인애착과 외로움의 관계에서 거절민감성과 자존감이 부분매개 하는 연구모형이 완전매개를 가정한 경쟁모형보다 더 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 한편 예측변인인 애착불안과 애착회피가 준거변인인 외로움에 주는 총 효과는 애착회피가 더 크고, 매개효과는 애착회피보다 애착불안이 상대적으로 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 나아가 외로움의 변량 66%는 성인애착, 거절민감성, 자존감에 의해 설명되는 것으로 나타나, 이들 변수가 외로움을 설명하는 중요한 변수임이 확인되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 상담 실제 및 후속 연구에 대한 시사점을 논하였다.
