본 연구에서는 세계적으로 유명한 스페인 문학의 신화적 인물인 ‘돈 후안’의 탄생부터 신화가 되어 한국 영화 ≪스캔들-조선남녀상열지사≫의 주인공 조원으로 재탄생되기까지의 과정을 살펴본다. 그동안 서구문화권을 중심으로 문학작품에서 끊임없이 재창조되었으며, 특히 낭만주의 시대에 출현한 스페인 작가 소리야의 『돈 후안 테노리오』와 프랑스 작가 라클로의 『위험한 관계』는 오늘날의 ‘돈 후안’ 캐릭터를 공고히 하고 영화화 하는데 일조하였다. 한국에서도 2003년 이재용 감독의 ≪스캔들-조선남녀상열지사≫가 개봉하였는데, 이 영화는 동양권에서는 처음으로 돈 후안 신화의 각색 작품이 영화화 된 것이었다. 따라서 조선시대를 배경으로 하는 이 영화 속에서 어떻게 돈 후안 신화의 요소가 녹아들었는지 살펴보고 오늘날에도 동·서양을 막론하고 계속되는 돈 후안 신화를 목격해본다.

『Don Juan』, one of the masterpieces of Spanish literature of the Golden Age is so well known throughout the world as to have many different versions, such as Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, as well as many movies adapted from this story. As there were many works similar to Don Juan in different countries in Europe, always existed discussions about their origins. But in the literary world of Spain El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra of Tirso de Molina is considered as its beginning. Since then many adaptations have continued to portray the character of ‘Don Juan’ creating a fertile modern myth.

Especially, Don Juan Tenorio written by José Zorrilla in Spain and The Dangerous Relations written by Choderlos de Laclos in France continue the tradition of 『Don Juan』. In particular, this French work was also filmed several times, among them the South Korean film ≪Untold Scandal≫ is recognized as a perfect adaptation of Laclo’s work. Through this movie, we can look into how this European myth could be moved to the 18th century Joseon Dynasty setting and how the Don Juan myth worked into ≪Untold Scandal≫, providing the basis for an interesting study.
