이 글은 안익태의 중남미 연주 활동을 추적한다. 1952년 멕시코 국립대학교 교향악단을 지휘한 후에 잠잠하던 중남미 활동은 1959년 멕시코와 코스타리카에서 총 4회의 음악회를 지휘하며 재개된다. 특히 1960년에는 아르헨티나의 투쿠만에서 열린 제1회 국제음악제에 개막연주회를 지휘하게 된다. 그 외에도 투쿠만에서만 총 5회의 음악회를 지휘하였으며 당시 남미의 최고 오케스트라라고 할 수 있는 부에노스아이레스의 LRA라디오 방송 교향악단을 지휘하게 된다. 남미에서의 활동은 브라질의 사우바도르로 이어졌지만 이후 남미에서의 연주 기회는 더 오지 않았다. 안익태를 가장 환영한 나라는 과테말라와 코스타리카였다. 과테말라는 안익태에게 상임지휘자 자리를 제안하기도 했으며 코스타리카는 1959년 이후 1962년까지 총 3회에 걸쳐 초대했다. 한국과 중남미가 외교관계 수립을 위해 노력하던 시점에 의도했던 아니던 안익태는 민간 교류 차원에서 어느 정도 역할을 한 것으로 인정할 수 있다.

This article traces the activities of Ahn EakTai in Latin and Central America. After leading the Mexico National University Symphony Orchestra in 1952 for the first time in the Central America, it was only 1959 that Ahn was invited from Mexico and Costa Rica where he conducted a total of four concerts. In 1960 Ahn's concerts included the opening concert at the 1st International Music Festival held in Tucuman Argentina, a total of five concerts in Tucuman only, LRA Radio Symphony Orchestra of Buenos, Bahia University Symphony Orchestra (salvador, Brazil). Ahn was most welcomed in countries such as Guatemala and Costa Rica. Guatemala has also proposed a resident conductor to Ahn and Costa Rica invited him from 1959 to 1962 a total of three times. When South Korea was trying to establish diplomatic relations with Central and Latin American countries, Ahn's concerts there were presumed to contribute to private sector's exchange.
