19세기 말에서 20세기 초 서구 지성계에 불었던 신비주의 사상과 오컬티즘의 실천은 자연과학과 기술의 발달이 가져온 과도한 합리주의와 외향화로 인한 개인의 자기소외라는 배경 하에서 이해될 수 있다. 이는 개인의 내면탐구와 더불어 과학과 예술의 결합 그리고 서양과 동양의 결합으로 자연스레 나아가는 결과를 가져왔다. 구스타프 마이링크의 대표작인 『골렘』또한 이러한 맥락에서 이해될 수 있다. 유심론적인 불교적 세계관은 외부에 의해 좌우되지 않고 시선을 내면으로 향해 자기발견과 깨달음을 추구한다. 그러나 이 작품에서 흥미로운 것은 이러한 추구과정이 시간과 공간의 초월, 깨어 있음과 잠의 경계를 초월하는 신비로운 의식 상태와 결합되어 환상성을 만들어내고 있다는 점이다. 내면탐구는 추상적인 사고의 영역에서만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 현실의 변화, 재구성 등의 구체적인 차원에서 이루어진다. 그리고 바로 이 지점에서 마이링크의 소설은 오컬티즘의 영역으로 넘어가고 있다. 이 점에서 소설은 자아탐구를 주제로 한 동시대 독일문학 작품과는 또 다른 독특한 자질을 갖고 있다고 할 수 있다. 오컬티즘 소설이기도 하고 비학소설이기도 하며 내면탐구 소설이 될 수 있는 다양한 면모를 갖춘 이 소설은 그 자체로 독일문학사에서 그 예를 찾아보기 힘든 독특한 작품의 위상을 갖는다고 할 수 있다.
The practice of Mysticism and Occultism, which had been inflicted on the western intellectuals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, can be understood under the background of the excessive rationalism brought about by the development of natural science and technology and the self-alienation of the individual. This has resulted in a natural progression through the combination of science and art, and the combination of the West and the Orient, as well as individual inquiry. Golem, the masterpiece of Gustav Meyrink, can also be understood in this context. The mind-centered Buddhist worldview seeks self-discovery and enlightenment toward the inside without being influenced by the outside. What is interesting in this work, however, is that this pursuit is creating fantasy, combined with a mysterious state of consciousness transcending the boundaries of time and space, the boundaries of awakening and sleep. Inside inquiry is not made only in the domain of abstract thinking, but in concrete aspects such as change of reality, reconstruction. And at this point Meyrink's novel is moving into the realm of occultism. In this regard, this novel has unique qualities that are different from those of contemporary German literature on the subject of self-inquiry. This novel, which is an Occultism Novel, a Mysticism novel, and has various aspects to be an Interior Novel, has its own unique position in the history of German literature.
