본 연구의 목적은 해외 디자인산업의 정량적 현황 데이터 수집을 통해 분류체계를 구축하여 현재 디자인산업 및 비즈니스 전반에 대한 구조를 파악하고 그 함의를 분석하는 데에 있다. 본 연구는 한국디자인진흥원의 연구과제를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 연구의 시간적 범위는 2009년 1월부터 2016년 7월까지 약 8년간이며, 내용적 범위는 해외 각국의 주요 디자인기관 보고서, 온라인 게재자료 및 링크된 광범위한 디자인네트워크들을 추적해 얻은 해외 디자인산업 관련 정량적 자료들을 대상으로 한다. 또한, ‘디자인산업(Design Industry)’, ‘디자인비즈니스(Design Business)’, ‘디자인경제(Design Economy)’, ‘디자인정책(Design Policy)’의 4가지 키워드를 중심으로 온라인 검색 및 대량의 경제, 경영 분야의 데이터들을 제공하고 있는 학술데이터베이스 ProQuest ABI 검색을 통해 검색된 자료를 중심으로 하였다. 수집된 총 269개의 자료 중 질적자료, 디자인산업과 직접 관련이 없는 자료들이 자료 검토 및 워크숍 과정에서 제외되었다. 최종적으로 81개의 문헌자료를 바탕으로 수집된 962개 메타 데이터를 기반으로 총 9단계의 분류체계가 구축되었다. 디자인산업 분류체계는 크게 디자인정의, 디자인가치, 디자인인프라, 디자인정책, 디자인교육, 디자인산업 분야, 디자인산업 전망, 디자인산업 경제적기여, 디자인비즈니스의 9개 대분류로 구분되었고 각 분야들은 세분화되어 9단계로 구성되었다. 그 중 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 것은 디자인비즈니스로, 그 중에서도 내부적 관점에서의 디자인기업, 디자인인력에 대한 데이터 비중이 컸다. 이 대분류를 토대로 디자인산업의 구조를 유추할 수 있는데 디자인산업의 범위 및 의미(Meaning), 디자인산업의 일반현황(General Status), 디자인산업의 발전 및 개선(Development), 디자인산업의 경제적 가치 및 효과(Effect), 디자인산업의 향후 방향 및 전망(Prospect)으로 구분된다. 각 요소들은 서로 밀접하게 영향을 미쳐 디자인산업 발전에 기여한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 분류체계 구축의 시발점으로, 향후 지속적인 조사 및 연구에 의한 데이터 보완과 업데이트를 통해 보다 완성도 및 신뢰도 높은 결과를 얻을 수 있을 것이다.The purpose of this study was to construct a taxonomy by collecting quantitative status data of overseas design industry. Secondly, to grasp the current structure of design industry and business in general and finally analyze its implications. The study was based on the research project of the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. The time range of the research was approximately eight years from January 2009 to July 2016. The scope of the research was quantitative in relation to overseas design industry, which was traced to major design agency reports and materials. In addition, the data was searched and retrieved from online journal ProQuest ABI search, an academic database that provides data on the management field by the four keywords of ‘Design Industry’, ‘Design Business’, ‘Design Economy’ and ‘Design Policy’. Of the 269 data collected, qualitative data and data not directly related to the design industry were excluded from the data review and workshop process. Finally, nine levels of taxonomy was constructed based on 962 meta-data collected from eighty-one documents. The design industry taxonomy was divided into nine categories of design definition, design value, design infrastructure, design policy, design education, design industry field, design industry prospect, economic contribution of design industry, and design business. Among them, design business, which occupies the largest portion among them, was a large portion of data on design companies from the inside viewpoint and designers. The structure of the design industry was inferred based on these major categories; ‘Meaning’ which defined the scope and meaning of the design industry, ‘General Status’, which indicated the general status of the design industry, ‘Development’, which was the development and improvement of the design industry. ‘Effect’ which meant the economic value and effect of the design industry, and ‘Prospect’, which indicated the future prediction of the design industry. Each element was closely related to each other, contributing to the development of the design industry. This study was the starting point of taxonomy construction, and helped to obtain the more complete and reliable result through data supplement and update by continuous investigation and research in the future.
