일제 식민지 시대를 거친 한국과 비슷한 상황들이 배경이 된 작품들을 통해 다양한 양상의 내러티브 패러다임의 중요성을 벤 오크리와 마이클 온다치의 문학 작품들을 통해서 살펴보고 포스트 식민주의 기간 중 시대의 아픔을 작품 속에서 어떠한 미학적 접근 방식을 추구했는지 그리고 어떻게 서술되고 표현 되었는지를 살펴보았다. 특히 다양한 수사학적 기법들을 볼 수 있었고 포스트 식민주의 내러티브를 통해 다양한 수사학적 표현 및 스토리텔링들이 차용되었음을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 포스트 식민주의 시대의 젠더에 관한 다양한 양상들과 표현들도 다양한 수사학적 기법들과 함께 보여 주었음을 볼 수 있었다.

특히 이 연구에서는 다문화주의 및 포스트 식민주의의 영향으로 주인공들이 겪는 갈등과 담론을 차별화된 내러티브의 개연성으로 묘사된 부분과 다양한 기법의 서술형식을 빌어 주인공들의 관계를 묘사한 것을 중심으로 살펴보았다.

나이지리아 출신인 벤 오크리의 『굶주린 길』에서 작가는 요루바 신화의 혼령아이를 1인칭 화자로 등장시킴으로써 독특한 서술형식의 소설을 선보이고 있다. 주인공 아자로의 가족을 통해 독립 이후 아프리카 사회의 폭력, 탐욕, 불신, 분열 등을 초현실적인 상황 묘사를 통해 접근 하였다.

마이클 온다치는 『영국인 환자』와 『아닐의 유령』을 통해 푸가 스타일, 불완전하거나 무정형의 형식을 선보인다.

본 연구는 두 작가가 식민지 이후의 시대의 재해석을 통해 전쟁이나 독립 이후 사회의 혼란상을 효과적으로 서술한 기법을 중심으로 살펴보았고 포스트 식민주의의 시대를 살아낸 주인공들의 내면세계의 묘사에 대한 서술적 기법을 살펴보았다.

The objective of this study is to discuss the narrative techniques between two authors who has postcolonial historical background.

There are studied two studied parts of narrative techniques which are how to develop the storytelling in postcolonial period. The first subject is mainly focused on rhetoric approach for the texts in postcolonial period and the next is about gender approach for the text in postcolonial period. Both approaches are apparently effected to express about postcolonial societies in postcolonial period and to deliver the situations of postcolonial period to the reader.

There are various fragmentary, amorphous patterns, fugue styles, and storytelling devices used to develop the complicated relationships between the characters. The varied language of each writer forms a significant element of their works. Their language is fully descriptive and both authors create a visual empirical reality, albeit through the use of imagined events.

Okri’s The Famished Road and Ondaatje’s The English Patient and Anil’s Ghost were all identified to possess a similar postcolonial approaches with various narrative techniques.
