이 연구에서는 질적접근에 기초하여 특성화고 출신 전문대생들의 고교교육 경험과 그 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 학생들이 특성화고를 선택하는 배경에는 낮은 성적과 인문계고에 대한 기피, 취업의지, 유리한 내신, 교육과정의 매력, 특성화고의 학교홍보와 근거리 등 다양한 이유들이 있었다. 특성화고에서 학생들은 비경쟁적 분위기와 풍부한 재정적 투자 속에서 전공공부를 즐기며 여유로운 학교생활을 하는 가운데, 의미있는 인간관계를 경험하고 있었다. 그러나 전공에 대한 실망과 방만한 교육과정 운영으로 학업에 대한 회의를 경험하고 있었으며, 차별과 성추행 등 부조리한 학내문화로 힘들어하고 있었다. 또 취업압박이 심한 교내분위기에서 인격적 모욕을 경험하고 있었으며, 취업전망의 부재와 좌절 속에서 대학진학을 결심하고 있었다. 대학진학 준비는 학교로부터의 도움 없이, 개인적으로 이루어지고 있었다. 결과적으로 특성화고는 이들에게 입시공부의 비용 없이 대학진학에 이른, 자신을 발견하고 넓은 세상을 경험할 수 있었던 긍정적 경험으로 이해되고 있었다. 그러나 인문계고생과 비교한 보편경험과 기초적 지식의 부재, 특성화고 교육과정과 공부에 대한 아쉬움, 특성화고생에 대한 사회적 편견 등의 부정적 의미화도 동시에 발견되었다. 이상을 기초로 특성화고 교육현실에 대하여, 첫째, 취업의 책임을 특성화고에 전가하는 작금의 특성화고 정책에 대한 개선, 둘째, 특성화고의 정체성 및 고교체제에 대한 근본적인 재고, 셋째, 특성화고의 부조리한 관습 및 비도덕적 학내문화에 대한 문제제기의 세 가지로 논하였다. 아울러 연구의 함의를 다섯 가지로 정리하고 후속연구에 대해 제언하였다.

This study examined the high school educational experience of specialized vocational high school graduates through a qualitative approach. There are various reasons for the students to choose the specialized vocational high school, such as low grades and disillusion on academic high school, willingness to work, favorable academic records, attractiveness to the curriculum, school promotion and attracting students, and proximity of location. In a specialized vocational high school, students were experiencing satisfaction with their majors, relaxed and pleasant school life, and meaningful teacher and student relationships in a non-competitive atmosphere among their classmates.

However, they have been experiencing skepticism about their studies due to the disappointment of their major and disgruntled curriculum, and have been struggling with narrow human relationships and unreasonable school culture. In addition, they feel insulted in the atmosphere that forces them to work and go to college in spite of the reality that employment prospects are lacking. However, they did not get much help from the school while preparing for college, and they were getting ready to go to school through friends, acquaintances, and the Internet. Finally, they understand that it was a meaningful experience in which they discovered themselves and recognized reality. They were able to experience challenges and pioneering through the specialized vocational high school and experience the growth that could not have been achieved with stereotyped high school life.

At the same time, however, they felt sorry about social prejudices caused by the minority position of the graduates of the specialized vocational high school, and the fact that they could not have a universal experience such as entrance examination in the general high school. Based on the above, we discussed the significance, implications, and limitations of the study.
