본 논문은 우리나라 정치에서 가장 빈번하게 쓰이는 포퓰리즘이라는 용어와 정치적 양식(style)으로서의 포퓰리즘에 대해 논하고 다양한 포퓰리즘 형태를 비교 고찰해, 공통점을 추출, 이를 통해 우리 사회에서 포퓰리즘이 발생하고 성장할 수 있는 환경은 있는지, 있다면 어떠한 것이 있는지를 고찰하고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. 한국에 포퓰리즘이 자랄 수 있는 환경이 있는지를 검증할 때 본 논문은 갈퉁의 욕구이론에 근거하여 검토하고자 한다. 포퓰리즘의 발생과 욕구 불만은 분명한 상관관계가 있기 때문이다. 그리고 결론 부분에서, 지금 현재 우리나라에 있어서의 포퓰리즘적 요소를 극복할 수 있는 방안은 있는지를 논하고자 한다.
