The purpose of this study is to investigate the lexical, syntactic, discourse, rhetoric and genre features shown in the expository and argumentative writings of Korean EFL university students divided into a high and low proficiency groups and native speakers. The study analyzed data from two corpora with a computational assessment tool, Coh-Metrix: a collected L2 corpus from Korean EFL university students and L1 from The British Academic Written English (BAWE). Specifically, 51 indices of Coh-Metrix were chosen for the text analysis. Significant group differences were shown in 35 indices in expository writings and 22 indices in argumentative writings. The results indicate that the differences between Korean EFL university students and native speakers are definitely clear-cut while the differences between the Korean groups are not extensive. Overall, Korean EFL university students do not fully understand the linguistic features of particular text types, expository and argumentative writing and fail to write texts in an effective way.
