본고는 1985년 말과 1986년 초에 발표된 류짜이푸(刘再復)의 글, 「문학의 주체성을 논하다(论文学的主体性)」를 연구 대상으로 삼는다. 이 글은 문학의 주체성 문제를 크게 ‘창조 주체’로서의 작가, ‘대상 주체’로서의 작중 인물, 그리고 ‘수용 주체’로서의 비평가와 독자로 구분하여 논의를 진행한다. 그리고 이와 같은 주체를 사회 현실과 세속으로부터 독립된 자율적이고 창조적인 주체로 상정한다.

이 글이 발표되기 전 중국에는 ‘인도주의’와 ‘소외’의 문제를 둘러싸고 일련의 사상 논쟁이 있었고, 비록 짧은 해프닝에 불과했지만 당 차원에서 ‘정신오염제거운동(1983)’이 일기도 했다. 그러한 시대 배경 속에서 발표된 류짜이푸의 이 글은, 이후 중국 문단에 중요한 문예 논쟁을 불러일으킬 만큼 적지 않은 영향을 행사했다. 그리고 이 글은 내포하는 이론적 문제점이 적지 않았음에도 불구하고 1980년대 문단의 분위기를 크게 일신했다. 마르크스 엥겔스 문예이론에 입각하여 문학을 정치에 종속된 계급투쟁의 도구로 여기는 주의주장은 이 논쟁이 있었던 1980년대 중반 이후 더 이상 위력을 발휘할 수 없게 되었다.

본고는 류짜이푸의 글이 발표된 직후에 벌어진 중국 사회과학원 문학연구소 연구원들의 논쟁에서 두 가지 중요한 비판 내용을 분석하였고, 이를 통해 류짜이푸의 글이 순수한 학술적 성격의 글이라기보다 오히려 사상투쟁, 이념투쟁의 성격을 띤 글이었음을 이해할 수 있었다. 이는 특히 근래에 몇몇 소장학자들에 의해 제기된 주장들 속에서도 파악할 수 있는 내용이다. 1980년대 문화현상에 대한 전반적인 재검토 작업이 이루어지기 시작한 2000년대 이후, ‘문학 주체성 논쟁’은 개혁개방 이후 중국문학의 전개과정에서 대단히 중요한 의의를 지닌 논쟁으로 ‘역사화’되고 있다. 특히 ‘문학 주체성 논쟁’은 문학의 ‘탈정치화’ 현상에 대한 반발에서 비롯된 문학의 ‘재정치화’ 담론과 관련해서도 깊이 있게 다뤄져야 할 문예현상으로 지속적으로 언급되고 있다.

This article examines the writings of Liu Zai-fu, published in late 1985 and early 1986, on the subject of “literary subjectivity". He divides the issue of subjectivity of literature into three major categories: writer’s as a creator subjectivity, character’s as a Object subject, and critic and reader as a acceptant subject. It is assumed that such a subject is autonomous and creative subject independent of social reality and world.

Before this article was published, there was a series of controversies over the issues of ‘humanitarianism' and ‘alienation' in China, and even though it was only a brief incident, the ‘Mental Decontamination Movement' (1983). The article of Liu Zai-Fu, published in the background of such an era, has had great influence on Chinese literature since then, causing significant literary debate. And his article has changed the atmosphere of the 1980s literary, despite the few theoretical problems it implies. The claim that literature is a tool of class struggle that is subordinated to politics has been no longer effective since the mid-1980s.

This article analyzed two important criticisms in the debate of researchers at the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences immediately after the publication of Liu Zai-Fu's writings. This is especially true in the claims made by some younger scholars in recent years. Since the 2000s when the general review of cultural phenomena began to take place in the 1980s, the ‘literature subjectivity debate’ has been ‘historicalized' as a controversial issue with a significant meaning in the course of Chinese literature after reform and opening. Especially, ‘literature subjectivity debate' has been consistently mentioned as a literary phenomenon to be dealt with deeply in relation to the discourse of ‘re-politicization' of literature stemming from the reaction against the phenomenon of ‘depoliticization' of literature.
