현대 도시전설의 형성과정을 논의하기 위한 시론으로 일제강점기 괴담을 대상으로 이야기의 전통적인 맥락과 새로운 이야기로서의 면모를 논의하고자 하였다. 자료는 1927년, 1930년, 1936년 『매일신보』에 연재된 괴담을 대상으로 하였다. 1930년대 전후의 괴담은 과거로부터 당시까지 전승되고 있었던 비현실적인 존재나 비일상적인 공간을 소재로 하면서 범죄, 오해, 가십 등으로 영역이 확장되었다. 또한 ‘누구에게 들었다’와 ‘내가 체험했다’를 강조하며 괴담이라는 타이틀을 내걸고 새로운 이야기로 등장하였다.
그 중 도깨비와 흉가는 전통적인 이야기에서의 모습을 고수하면서도 불안한 시대상을 내포한 소재로 신문기사와 괴담의 단골 소재가 되었다. 서술방식의 변화, 사실적 경험담 등의 특징은 당대 대중문화의 형성과 개인과 경험에 대한 관심이라는 시대적 변화가 반영된 결과이다. 또한 이와 같은 괴담의 특징은 현대 도시전설에서도 다양하게 확인되는 바, 이에 관한 지속적인 연구가 이루어져야 한다.As a comment to discuss the formation process of modern urban legend, the traditional context and aspects as new stories of the myths during the Japanese colonial era were examined. The data was collected from the myths published in a series in in 1927, 1930 and 1936. The materials of the myths around 1930s were unrealistic beings or nondaily space that had been transmitted from the past to those days, and then were expanded to crimes, misunderstandings, gossips and so on. In addition, stories with emphasis on ‘I've heard it from someone’ and ‘I've experienced it’ under the title of a myth appeared as new stories.Among them, goblins and haunted houses were the materials that kept to their figures in traditional stories, yet involved uneasiness of those times, and became frequent subjects of newspaper articles and myths. The changes in their descriptions and the characteristics of realistic stories of personal experiences were the results that the changes of the times, such as the formation of pop culture of those days and the interest in individuals and experiences, had been reflected. Moreover, as the characteristics of these myths are found in the modern urban legend in various ways, continuous study on them need to be conducted.
