1517년 루터의 종교개혁과 성서번역 이후 독일문학은 오늘에 이르기까지 각 시대마다 위대한 종교문학을 탄생시켰으며, 독일문학은 성서의 기반위에서 탄생되었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 독일 계몽주의 이후 18세기 클롭슈톡의 『메시아』를 비롯해 괴테의 『파우스트』, 횔덜린의 시, 19세기의 낭만주의 작품들을 걸쳐 20세기 릴케의 시, 토마스 만의 『요셉과 그의 형제들』은 성서적 모티브를 통해 새롭게 탄생된 작품들이다. 전후 서독의 하인리히 뵐의 『아담아, 너는 어디에 있느냐?』와 동독의 슈테판 하임의 『다윗 왕』, 페터 학스의 『아담과 이브』 역시 성서적 소재를 통해 히틀러의 파시즘과 동독의 전체주의에 항거하고 있다. ‘종교와 문학’에 대한 독일의 논의는 1980년대에야 비로소 활발하게 전개되었다. 1984년 튀빙엔대학에서의 ‘신학과 문학. 20세기의 대화가능성과 한계들’이라는 주제로 문학인과 신학자들의 시대에 대한 진단과 반성, 책임을 토대로 문학과 신학의 상호협력이 필요하다는데 공감을 보였다. 튀빙엔에서의 심포지엄을 토대로 1980년대 후반부터 ‘문학과 종교’와 관련한 연구가 활발하게 진척되었다. 또한 연구의 활성화는 독일에만 한정된 것이 아니라, 2000년대에 들어와서는 독일어권 문화에 해당하는 오스트리아에서도 확대되어 나갔다.

After the Reformation and the translation of the Bible by Luther in 1517, German literature has produced great religious literature through the ages, and it is no exaggeration to say that German literature was born on the basis of the Bible. After the Enlightenment in Germany, Goethe’s Faust, the romantic works in the 19th century, Rilke’s poems in the 20th century, Joseph and his brothers by Thomas Mann are the works created from the motives of the Bible. The discussion of ‘religion and literature’ in Germany has been active as late as in the 1980s, which results from the distinct character restricts of German history. Based on the symposium in Tübingen, studies on ‘literature and religion’ have actively progressed since the late 1980s. In addition, beyond Germany active research was expanded to Austria in the 2000s.
