1917년 러시아혁명은 유럽의 지식인들과 노동자들에게 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. 에스파냐의 지식인들과 노동자들에게도 마찬가지이다. 이들 가운데서 노동자 단체들이 특히 더 많은 영향을 받았다. 그렇다면 그들은 어떤 반응을 보였고 왜 그런 반응을 보였을까? 이 질문에 대한 답을 모색하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다.

사실 그들이 보인 반응에 대해서는 일부 학자들의 선행 연구를 통해 어느 정도 짐작할 수 있다. 하지만 그들이 그런 반응을 보인 이유에 대해서는 좀 더 명확하고 자세한 분석이 필요하다. 여기서는 이것을 러시아혁명이 일어난 1917년에서 에스파냐에 프리모 데 리베라 군사독재가 시작되는 1923년까지로 국한하여 다룬다. 이 시기에 그들의 반응과 그 이유가 집약적으로 잘 나타나기 때문이다.

잘 알고 있다시피 1917년 러시아혁명은 3월 혁명과 11월 혁명으로 나뉜다. 그리고 혁명에 성공한 볼셰비키 정권은 곧 이어 공산주의인터내셔널(코민테른) 결성을 추진했다. 이 시기 유럽에는 또한 1918년에 막을 내리게 되는 제1차 세계대전이 전개되고 있었다. 이러한 제1차 세계대전 발발과 종전, 3월 혁명과 11월 혁명, 코민테른 가입 요구 등이 에스파냐 노동자 단체들 고유의 혁명 이념과 더불어 그들의 반응에 중대한 영향을 미친 요인들이다. 이들은 그들이 그런 반응을 보인 이유를 설명해주는 요인들이기도 하다.

단적으로 말해서 에스파냐 노동자 단체들에 미친 러시아혁명의 영향은 에스파냐공산당 창당으로 명백하게 드러난다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 에스파냐공산당의 창당 과정을 여기서 자세히 들여다볼 수 있게 된다.
