1234년 8월 남송이 하남으로 군사를 파견하면서 시작된 몽골과의 충돌은 1273년까지 40년 동안 계속되었다. 1230년대 후반에서 1240년대(우구데이칸 후반기~구육칸 재위시기)에는 아직 전면전으로 치닫지 않았지만, 남송은 타협을 거부하였다. 1258년 뭉케칸은 남송 공략에 나섰지만 다음 해 사천에서 사망하였다. 1260년 대칸에 즉위한 쿠빌라이칸은 아릭부케와의 내전과 이단의 난으로 곤경에 처하자 3차례나 사신을 파견하여 타협을 제안하였지만, 남송은 거부하였다. 이후 쿠빌라이칸은 강남 정벌을 천명하였고 요충지인 양양과 번성을 점령한 후 양자강 유역으로 진출하였고 1276년 1월 바얀이 이끄는 몽골군은 남송 수도 임안에 입성하였다. 거대한 인구, 발전된 경제, 그리고 강력한 수군을 보유한 남송이 빠르게 무너진 배경에는 무능한 황제들과 분열된 조정의 무기력한 대처와 결단력의 부재, 변화하는 국제 정세를 정확하게 파악하지 못하였던 비현실적 명분론, 군비 지출로 인한 악성 재정, 몽골에 주도권을 넘긴 수동적 전략, 그리고 관료와 장수들 사이에 만연한 패배주의 등의 요인이 있었다. 몽골은 초원과 만주의 기마병, 서역의 새로운 무기, 그리고 한인들을 주축으로 양성한 수군 등 제국의 자원을 동원하여 정복에 성공하였고 역사상 처음으로 근현대 ‘중국’ 영토를 구성하는 모든 지역을 통합하였다.
