파리외방전교회의 창설자들은 이냐시오 영성과 프랑스 영성학파의 영향을 받았었다. 김대건은 마카오 신학교에서 이러한 역사적 전통안에 있는 파리외방 전교회 선교사들에 의해 양성되었다.

만일 이러한 영성적 배경을 간과한다면 김대건 신부의 편지들은 타당하게 읽혀질 수가 없다. 때문에 본 연구에서는 파리외방전교회가 오늘날 자신의 뿌리를 찾고 있는 아시아 교회와의 관계를 성찰하며 내놓은『파리외방 전교회 선교 350주년 심포지엄』에 기고된 여러 학자들의 글과『성 김대건 안드레아 신부의 서한』 중에서 자신의 양성자였던 르그레즈와 그리고 리브와 신부와 함께 주고받은 서신을 중심으로 고찰하였다.

그는 편지의 수신자에게『영신수련』책을 요청하였고, ‘복되신 동정 마리아께 대한 신심’을 여러 번 드러내었고, ‘렉시오 디비나’도 하였다. 또한 ‘갈멜 신비사상’의 용어들을 통해 자신의 심경도 드러내고 있다. 이것은 마카오 신학교가 행한 영적 양성의 특징이 어떠한지를 보여주는 증거들이다.

Kim Dae-Gun had been formated in Macao seminary by the Missions Étrangères de Paris(=MEP). The Founders of MEP were influenced by Ignatian spirituality and École spirituelle de France. This might be the crucial tradition for the later MEP members and formators in their seminaries.

If we ignored this spiritual back ground, Father Kim’s letters could not be read authentically. So this article tried to trace the footprints of these back grounds. He asked the book of Spiritual Exercises to his letter recipient. He showed the piety of B.M.V. many times. He did Lectio Divina as well. We can probably indicate that these are the evidences of his good spiritual formation in the Macao Seminary. His journey to Homeland was not only a physical migration, but also spiritual pilgrimage or mystical journey to God.
