피살 등 자연사(自然死)가 아닌 죽음을 맞이하여 원통함을 품었을 것으로 여겨지는 망자가 원혼(冤魂)이다. 현대 한국에는 이들을 위해 연행되는의례들이 다수 존재한다. 그 의례들은 원혼을 위한 의례라는 의미로 ‘원혼의례(冤魂儀禮, ritual for grudge-harboring spirit)’라고 불릴 수 있다.

이 의례들은 누가 그것을 어떤 목적을 가지고 어떻게 연행하는지에 따라서로 다른 특징과 의미를 보여준다. 이 글은 그것을 ①기양, ②현창, ③항의, ④치유, ⑤연민 중심이라는 다섯 가지로 유형화할 수 있다고 보고, 그각각의 특징을 정리하였다. 이러한 작업은 현대 한국 원혼의례를 이해하기위한 하나의 틀을 마련하려는 목적을 갖는다. 원한을 가지고 죽어간 망자들과 그 유족들의 원통함을 공감한다는 것은 잘못된 관행과 역사 평가를 바로 잡는 일이며, 나아가 개인을 넘어 국가와 사회 공동체의 평화⋅안락⋅치유, 더 나아가서 인간 생명의 고귀함이라는 가장 기본적인 가치를 드러내는일이다. 원혼의례에 대한 관심과 연구가 요청되는 까닭이 여기에 있다.

The deceased, who is believed to have had grudge in the face of death, not natural death such as murder, is the grudge-harboring spirit. In modern Korea, there are many rituals performed for them. The rituals can be called ‘ritual for grudge-harboring spirit’.

These rituals reveal different characteristics and meanings according to how they are performed or what kind of purpose they aim for. This study tries to pay attention to this aspect and classify Korean rituals for grudge-harboring spirit into the five categories: ① invocation of fortune and chasing away evil, ② revelation, ③ complaint, ④ healing, and ⑤ focusing on compassion.

These five categories of the rituals aim to provide framework in order to understand Korean rituals for grudge-harboring spirit in the modern times. To empathize with the resentment of the dead who held grudges and their bereaved ones rectifies wrong practices and distorted history. Furthermore, beyond the individual, this framework reveals the very basic values such as peace, comfort, healing, in addition to these, nobility of human life, of the nation as well as societal communities. This is why irrelevant researches and attention on the ritual for grudge-harboring spirit are indispensable.
