Literature Circles, which are collaborative and student-centered reading groups, are a teaching method that draws students into increasingly abstract and relevant discussions about literature. This paper proposes a way to think about literature circles vis-a-vis a Winnicottian psychoanalytic approach to Reader-Response Theory. One conclusion is that reader-response theory considered in terms of a pedagogical practice in the form of literature circles emphasizes the student’s ‘true self,’ which includes his or her own experiences in interactions with a text and a community. After introducing and defining literature circles, the paper will discuss Reader-Response Theory and Winnicott. Then it will detail the implementation of literature circles together with observations of student responses that to varying degrees demonstrate their efficacy.
