본 연구의 목적은 최남선이 주도한 <신문관> 발행 잡지에 등장한 호랑이의 특징과 그 의미를 살펴보는 것에 있다. 연구 대상은 <신문관>에서 발행한 잡지 중 호랑이 이미지를 표지로 내세우거나 호랑이를 강조한 잡지 - 『아이들보이』, 『붉은 저고리』, 『소년』, 『새별』, 『청춘』을 대상으로 하였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과 <신문관> 발행 잡지의 호랑이 표상이 지닌 특징과 의미를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 1) <신문관>의 호랑이는 한반도와 호랑이 형상이 유사함을 주장하며 국토의 표상을 제시하였다. 당대 일본 학자들이 한반도를 힘없고 나약한 토끼라 규정하였을 때, 최남선은 한반도의 지형이 호랑이와 유사함을 주장하였고, 이를 대중화 하는데 성공하였다. 2) 민족적 표상과 미래의 비전을 제시하였다. 근대 열강들의 침탈이 계속되었던 20세기 초, 강인함과 용맹함을 지닌 호랑이의 긍정적 이미지를 부각시키고 이를 우리 민족의 표상이자 미래상으로 제시함으로써 암울한 시기 대중들에게 희망과 용기를 북돋아 주었다. 3) 독자별 맞춤형 호랑이를 제시하였다. 이렇듯 연령별로 차별화된 호랑이 이미지는 독자들에게 친밀감을 높이는 기제로 작용했다. 4) 기법적인 면에서 다양한 호랑이를 제시하였다. 『소년』의 호랑이가 한반도 지형을 토대로 도안을 시도했다면 『아이들보이』에서는 증명사진을 찍듯 호랑이 얼굴만 확대하여 의인화한 호랑이를 선보였고, 마지막 호의 표지는 아르데코 기법으로 수직과 수선, 삼각형, 네모를 이용하여 호랑이를 최대한 추상, 단순화하여 표현하였다. 『새별』의 호랑이가 캐릭터 풍으로 제시되었다면, 『청춘』 창간호의 호랑이는 강하고 용맹한 기운을 떨치는 호랑이로 등장하였다. 이렇듯 호랑이를 묘사하는 방식에 있어서 다양한 시도들은 이전부터 있어 온 호랑이 이미지의 수동적 재현이 아닌 능동적인 호랑이 상(像)을 제시하였다.
