싱어는 이익 평등 고려의 원리를 동물에게까지 일관되게 적용함으로써 육식, 공장식 축산, 동물 실험 등을 종차별주의로 고발하고, 그런 관행으로부터 동물 해방을 촉구한다. 그리고 그러한 동물 해방의 실천 방안의 하나로서 윤리적 채식주의를 옹호한다. 싱어의 동물 윤리는 유정성 기준, 복지 중심 동물 윤리, 완전 채식주의에 대해서 비판받아왔다. 도덕적 지위의 기준으로서 유정성은 인간중심주의로부터는 넓다고 비판받고, 생명중심주의로부터는 좁다고 비판받는다. 그러나 유정성 기준은 인간 아닌 동물들을 도덕적 고려의 범위에 포함하는 장점이 있고, 모든 생명을 도덕적으로 고려하는 데 따르는 복잡함과 갈등을 피할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 또한 싱어의 동물 복지론은 동물 권리론으로부터 동물의 권리를 존중하고 보호하지 못한다고 비판받고, 완전 채식주의는 부분 채식주의보다 종차별주의적 관행을 개혁하는 데 덜 효과적이라고 비판받는다. 이론적인 논란에도 불구하고 싱어의 동물 윤리는 동물에 관한 비윤리적 관행을 개혁하는 윤리적 실천에 지대한 영향을 미쳐왔다.

By consistently applying the principle of equal consideration of interests to animals, Singer denounces meat-eating, factory farming, and animal experiments as speciesism and calls for the liberation of animals from such practices. And he advocates ethical veganism as one of the practical measures for animal liberation. Singer's animal ethics have been criticized for sentience criterion, welfare-centered animal ethics, and veganism. As a criterion of moral status, sentience has been criticized as broad from anthropocentrism and as narrow from biocentrism. However, on the one hand, the sentience criterion has the advantage of both including non-human animals in moral considerations and on the other hand, avoiding the complexities and conflicts involved with considering all forms of life. Singer's animal welfare theory also has been criticized for failing to respect and protect animal rights from animal rights theory, and veganism has been criticized as being less effective at reforming speciesist practices than demi-vegetarianism. Despite theoretical controversies, Singer's animal ethics has profoundly impacted ethical movements that reform unethical practices regarding animals.
